Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. For over a Century Leavenworth was the oldest maximum security penitentiary in the Federal Bureau of Prisons, sometimes referred to as the "Flagship" of the Bureau. It was a home away from home for George "Bugs" Moran, arch-enemy of Al Capone, Jake "Greasy Thumb" Guzik, considered the financial genius of Capone's mob, and Louis "Lepke" Buchalter, said to be one of the most ruthless killers of the Twentieth Century. In 2005 its maximum security status was reduced to medium security and there were rumors it might eventually be closed and converted into a museum. This history of the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary is the end product of four years of research, including a review of newspaper files and early records of the institution at the National Archives, Central Plains Region, and the first-person accounts of many retirees.
