United States Congressman from Tennessee

Member of the President Andrew Johnson Impeachment Congress

(1818-80) Born near Columbia, Tenn., he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1843, and commenced a practice in Huntingdon, Tenn. He fought in the Mexican War as a lieutenant. He served as a Tennessee delegate at the 1861 peace conference held in Washington, D.C., to try and prevent the Civil War. He joined the Union Army when he was commissioned lieutenant colonel of the 7th Tennessee Cavalry, on November 14, 1862. He was captured on March 24, 1864 at Union City, Tenn., and was imprisoned at Macon, Ga., and Columbia, S.C. After his exchange at Charleston, S.C., in August 1864, he resumed active duty and was appointed commander of the cavalry forces in western Kentucky until the close of the war. Promoted to rank of brevet brigadier general on March 13, 1865. Served as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 1868. Served as U.S. Congressman, 1865-70, including the 40th U.S. Congress which was the President Andrew Johnson impeachment congress.
