25.5" Rare and monumental, mid 19th century, heavy duty Baluster vases. Excellent condition. These were discovered in the late 1970's on the recently purchased dairy farm property by a Canadian. Noticing 8 large vegetation covered mounds around the property, he eventually dug into one. Under a thin layer of dirt, he started to find these ceramics. He contacted the Chinese authorities and though initially disinterested, over the next years helped with the excavation. It is believed these were laid carefully into pits & covered with dirt at the order of a new emperor, having obsoleted the Foo Dog, or part of the design. The property owner was given permission to send so many a year to a relative in America, & still does. Even though the Chinese lower his quota regularly. These date from about 1850 to 1875, so would come from the transitional reigns of either/or, Daoguang Emperor to Xianfeng Emperor to Tongzhi Emperor to Guangxu Emperor. It was not uncommon for a new emperor to obsolete, even ban, the previous emperors designs & colors. They have 4 applied pierced lion heads around the shoulder. These appear to be for securing down the lid, rope handles, or both.
