(1802-69) He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1821, and commenced practice in Montgomery, Alabama. Served as Governor of Alabama, 1841-45. Served as U.S. Senator, 1848-49 and 1853-61. He was the chairman of the Committee on Printing. Also served on the Committee on Engrossed Bills. Served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the 35th and 36th Congresses. He was nominated for Vice President of the United States on the Democratic ticket with Stephen A. Douglas in 1860, but declined. Served as president of the constitutional convention of Alabama in 1865.
