This antique German late Victorian glass Christmas ornament represents a hot air balloon with a dangling glass "basket" ornament hanging below. About 6 inches high overall, the balloon piece is ribbed and painted with green, pink, and yellow stripes in the ribs. The top and bottom are bright pink with thin white stripes. Inside is a piece of wired gold tinsel. The hanging feather tree ornament at the bottom is a cube or square with a wicker or basketweave type embossed design in pale green.
The larger ornament is wrapped in gold wire-covered cording to represent the rope rigging of a hot air balloon. The ornaments have no silvering - I'm not sure if they were made that way (typical of Victorian ornaments), or if there was once inner mercury silvering that just degraded over the last 100 or more years. Though there would be no point to the tinsel sprig inside if the ornament had been silvered. There are no breaks or chips to the almost paper-thin glass but there is wear and fading to the paint and the ropes need to be repositioned.
