Of those, some 34,000 died along the way, about 17 deaths per mile. The migrant wagons carved 5-foot-deep ruts in the sandstone, which are still visible in Southern Wyoming. By the end of the Civil War, approximately half of the Regular Army soldiers were foreign-born, with the Irish comprising more than 20 percent. In 1870, the majority of the labor force was engaged in agriculture; by 1910 labor had shifted to industry and non-agricultural jobs. By 1900, women made up more than one-quarter of the non-farm labor force.
