Circa: 1920 Country of Origin: Japan Manufacturer: Pre War Japan Import
This wonderful antique Christmas ornament features a molded composition or clay face Santa Claus figure riding in a mica glittered cardboard canoe. The Santa figure has a faded red suit made of cotton batting, a white cotton beard, and old cotton pipe cleaner chenille "fur" trim around his cap.The heavy, stiff cardboard canoe is 4-1/2 inches long, heavily encrusted in thick mica glitter. Crinkled thin gold wire is attached to each end for hanging on the tree.
There are no labels or markings - this type of decoration was made in both Germany and Japan between the two World Wars, 1918 to mid 1930s. A similar ornament can be seen on page 148 of Robert Brenner's Christmas Revisited price guide book, but it doesn't state the country of origin. The canoe is in very good condition with no damage and very little mica loss. The Santa figure's black paper belt has some wear.
