Circa: 1900 Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Turn of the Century American Production
These American made old colored wax spiral Christmas candles were used to light Christmas trees until the early 1900s before electric Christmas lights came into common use, used with small tin candle holders that clipped onto the branches. Of course having actual fire on the tree was quite dangerous.
There are 15 larger size candles in the box, which originally held 16. They're about 5-1/4 inches high, a good inch and a half longer than typical antique tree candles. The candles are in very good condition considering they are well over 100 years old with little if any warping, melting, or distortion. The box has wonderful graphics of an old fashioned Santa putting candles on a Christmas tree, viewed through a drapery covered window. The colors are probably faded and there is mild wear and discoloration, but it's intact with no tears. The box has no manufacturer information, just "Improved Dripless Starlight Candles" on the lid.
