At first I thought this beautiful composition diorama Christmas scene display was a candy container, but the seams are glued and there is no opening for candy. It's a wonderful tabletop display, with a half dome base and thick cardboard circular snowy sky painted back panel, 3 inches high by 4-3/4" long by 2-1/2" deep. The dimensional scene features a painted clay Santa Claus standing in front of a sponge moss tree with real twig trunk. Off to the side is a clay cityscape of tall buildings, one with a clock tower. Another sponge moss pine tree stands beside the buildings. The platform is thickly coated in white mica and clear glass glitter to sparkle like snow. The circular back panel is hand painted with snow falling from a dark blue sky onto a snowy forest of pine trees.
The scene is in very good condition. The silver foil panel across the front of the base has a little wear, and the snowy ground covering is no longer as white as it was when new. The underside is marked Japan. I'm unsure whether it dates to the pre-war period or post war, it could have been made anywhere from the 1930s to 1950s. I'm thinking it's probably older based on the nice quality.
