Manufacturer: Bromwell's Sifters
Neat find out of a home, a vintage Bromwell's Measuring Sifter, this one with an all-over medium green color (what we would call a medium Kelly green or Irish green) and having a wood handle or knob on one side. We can't tell the exact color of the wood handle due to wear and general dark coloring. Could be a dark blue, dark green or lighter black color.
This is the 3 cup size, with markings for One, Two and Three Cups. The markings on this sifter are harder to read than we usually see. All words & numbers are raised lettering on the front side, impressed outwardly from the inside. This vintage sifter shows a patent with "PAT. No. 1,753,995" although we can't see the number "1" here but know that would be what it was. The front states "Made in USA, Bromwell's, Measuring-Sifter, Guaranteed" above the patent info. The U.S. Invention Patent number dates to 1930, but we don't know the exact age of this sifter. We would guess this one dates from the 1940's-1950's.
Measures about 5 1/2 inches tall, about 4 5/8 inches greatest width across the top (while top circular opening, not exactly a circle, measuring 4 3/8 inches wide in one direction and 4 5/8 inches wide in another), about 5 7/8 inches total width including metal holding handle and 5 1/4 inches total width including wood crank handle to opposite sifter side.
We've provided 8 images to show from all sides including the top and bottom views. We could not get the green color to show as you will see in person. Most of the images were shot using the camera lighting which can cause white "hot spots" on the tin surface and changes or lightens the coloring. We included two images shot without the light which appear yellower, but these make the green color darker, although still not what you will see in person (while still not the exact color, the green in image #5 comes closest). But if you look across the images you will get a better idea of condition. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.
Old used vintage condition which shows its age & use wear. The crank handle turns fine but with a slight jerky motion, not bad. There is some slight denting/bending to this piece, not large dents but you can see flattening across the top rim, which also shows a number of points and dents from use/storage. These also cause slight denting near the rim on the front body of this old piece. The interior body and holding handle are gray tin and show expected tarnishing, There is spotting/discoloration on the interior of the handle (not orange rust in color but there). The outer body has many scratches (dots and lines) and scraped spots showing silver in the green coloring including one larger spot on the lower front. There is other spotting, discoloration spots, dark spots/darkening, etc., other general wear to the body. The sifter wire mesh is in great shape. The wood handle spins easily and shows a good bit of age/use/surface paint wear overall, no cracks but very tiny edge chipping at the top handle, some light spotting, other general wear/rubbed wear/surface wear. This old kitchen piece has a good bit of use wear that supports believability of age and adds to the vintage look.
A good addition to any collection of vintage kitchen utensils, gadgets, tools, etc., or one specifically related to baking and sifters. Would also look fun on display in a bakery or restaurant or repurposed for other decor/uses.
