Manufacturer: Animal Costume Jewelry
Nifty vintage costume jewelry find out of a home. This is an unmarked (no manufacturer or country of origin) metal animal pin or brooch in the shape of a salamander, lizard, gecko or other reptile.
From the look and coloring, it reminds us of the Spain or Spanish made metal pins popular in the 1960's, but without any markings we can't guarantee that is what this is. It is definitely vintage and not new.
Measures 1 3/4 inches greatest length (snout to tail) and about 15/16 inch greatest width (from one foot to its opposite foot). A magnet does not stick to this older piece, so it could be brass or some other metal (it is not sterling or gold as it is not marked). Lightweight to wear, weighing under 2 ounces.
Gold tone base coloring with painted/enameled black and light turquoise blue areas. This has an ornate raised metal design with beading on the back and tail, formed scaling on the head with both eyes detailed, diamond and geometric shapes on its back, and curlicue and dot patterns on the legs. The back or reverse side is a plain gold tone metal with a standard pin closure. Closure works fine and tight, it takes a slight push to fully close once pin is inserted.
Lovely condition with no chips, cracks, pieces missing. As this came out of a home and was likely worn, it perhaps has slight expected use wear, perhaps some surface scratches, etc., although none of that jumps out at us. We note that on the lower snout there is one scale that is less turquoise blue, showing more golden in color. The top blue enameling is worn a bit here (or may be how made, we don't know). There may be other tiny touches of enamel wear but nothing bad and nothing that detracts from the overall great look to this pin.
Please note in the images that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the shiny metal surfaces. Please examine the images closely, using the zoom feature. |
