PERIOD & CLASSICAL FURNITURE BOOKS:
THE SHAKER CHAIR BY CHARLES R. MULLER & TIMOTHY RIEMAN

For well over a century, the world has noted the distinctive chairs made by Shaker communities throughout the eastern United States. A writer for House Beautiful suggested at the beginning of the twentieth century that "If you own a Shaker chair, preserve it with great care, for it will soon be considered an antique, and a rare one at that." In this definitive book, that statement is verified as the authors examine in depth the styles and production techniques of chairs made at ten Shaker communities during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Historical and contemporary photographs, extensive journal and account book references, diaries, postcards, catalog advertisements, and detailed line drawings are all used to document the chairs' history. Readers will find valuable information on identification of chair types and origins as well as an analysis of design and construction. An essential resource for collectors, historians, designers, and devotees of antique furniture.

His works received awards of merit at the Cincinnati Industrial Exposition of 1883, the New Orleans Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition of 1884-85, and the Southern Exposition at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1886. PERIOD & CLASSICAL FURNITURE BOOKS:
The English Regional Chair by Bernard D. Cotton

This is arguably the most detailed study ever made of any branch of British furniture. It covers in considerable depth, on a region by region basis, the work of hundreds of craftsmen, spread throughout the country, working in the general tradition of the area but superimposed with their own individual design ‘signatures’.Employing a remarkable combination of talents, the author has examined thousands of regional chairs, researched local archives, conducted field studies, collected anecdotal evidence and used computers to relate the evolution of known types and makes. The result is a living account of the development of countless styles of chairs from all over England and the way of life of the craftsmen who produced them. This authoritative book has revolutionised the collecting and the study of vernacular furniture. It is quoted in auction catalogues and consulted avidly by collectors as hundreds of new makers’ names emerge from the blanket anonymity of ‘Windsor’, ‘ladder back’, ‘spindle back’, and other generalisations. It is a key standard work of reference, encyclopaedic in its breadth of information and illustration. The AuthorDr Bernard (Bill) Cotton is a researcher and lecturer specialising in the history of regional furniture traditions. He is Visiting Professor of Furniture at Buckinghamshire College of Higher Education, High Wycombe, and Visiting Professor of Furniture History at Southampton Institute of Higher Education. His research takes him to all parts of Britain and abroad, particularly North America, where he is involved with field work projects, recording furniture in traditional settings and evaluating its social history. Following two years of field research in the fishing communities of Newfoundland he has recently produced an exhibition of furniture from that country, with examples showing its antecedents in the British traditions. The exhibition has travelled to major museums throughout Canada, 1995-1997, and was funded by the Canadian and Newfoundland Governments. When he is not getting to know furniture he is to be found fly-fishing for brown trout on the River CoIn, near to his home in the Gloucestershire Cotswolds.

ART & AMERICANA:
Vital Forms: American Art and Design in the Atomic Age, 1940-1960

Vital Forms: American Art and Design in the Atomic Age, 1940-1960 By Brooke Kamin Rapaport and Kevin L. Stayton, et al. From the Studebaker and the Slinky7 to the TWA terminal and paintings by Willem de Kooning and Mark Rothko, 1940 to 1960 was a compelling era for the arts in America. Artists and designers responded to the atomic-age anxieties of the postwar period with "vital" forms - organic imagery and biomorphic shapes based on nature. These forms proliferated during the optimism of the late '40s and '50s prosperity, in Tupperware7 and the Hula Hoop as well as Eames chairs and Calder mobiles.Examining visual arts from an interdisciplinary perspective, Vital Forms focuses on the development and ascendancy of organic imagery. Essays placing the works in historical context, hundreds of photos, and an engaging mix of fine art and commercial design make this a must-have for serious art and design enthusiasts and fans of American popular culture. 350 illustrations, 250 in full color, 400 pages,10 x 12"ISBN 0-8109-6927-0EAN 9780810969278 US$75.00 Brooke Kamin Rapaport is associate curator, Department of Contemporary Art, at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.Kevin L.
