FURNITURE/CHEST OF DRAWERS: Rare Aaron Shaw Rococo Victorian Oak Chest Rare Rococo Victorian oak chest made by Aaron Shaw, Cincinnati, OH. This piece has an oval mirror held in place by a fabulous open carved frame with naturalistic oak leaves, acorns and branches. There is a slight joint separation in the bottom of the mirror frame. One of the threaded knobs has been replaced and the threads are worn but the mirror still stays in place. The original marble has a serpentine front. It has been repaired in the past. The base has two burled front serpentine shaped small drawers over two full drawers. Each drawer has a knob pull, acorn carved key escutcheon, and a fancy molding around the edge. The front corners of the case are branch carved. This naturalistic style is unique to Cincinnati. Most pieces similar to this that we have seen over the years were made by Mitchells and Rammelsberg. It has a wonderful open carved crest with an incised carved burled panel and a fancy drop finial that is reflected in the mirror. The sides of the mirror frame have fluted burled panels, rounded candle cups, carvings and boxes on the bottom with burled tops and carved pulls. The base has three regular drawers and a "secret" drawer on the bottom. The finish on the bottom drawer has some scuffing and scratches - normal for a chest that has been used over the years. The burled drawer fronts have ornately carved centers around the key escutcheon. The top drawer has a compartmentalized maple interior. The corners of the case have a lovely combination of half columns, carvings, burled panels and cut outs.
