REFERENCE BOOKS: Mirror Book Published by Schiffer Books and written by H. Schiffer - Size: 9x12 - Pages: 256 Illustrations: 688 - Color Plates 16 A very good photographic survey of the subject. Mirrors dating from Egypt's New Kingdom, circa 1300 B.C., through the Art Nouveau movement at the beginning of the twentieth century A.D. are arranged in chronological groups to demonstrate the gradual development of artistic styles. The rich history of glass production in Europe directly influenced interior design in general and mirror designs in particular. Here are European, English and American examples from common as well as Royal households. The author has included reproductions of period paintings of room interiors which display mirrors in their normal surroundings in taverns, bedrooms, dressing rooms and reception rooms alike. Many of these mirrors retain their makers' or first sellers' labels and are shown together with those labels. These and the information contained herein about the makers makes attribution of similar unlabeled mirrors possible. Private and museum collections in Europe and America have contributed to this pictorial study, thereby providing a broad range of examples: heavily carved Italian Baroque mirrors, enormous gilded English Rococo mirrors, mahogany veneered architectural mirrors, French convex mirrors and American tabernacle mirrors. The comprehensive sections on gilded Queen Anne and Chippendale mirrors include many subtle variations. There are 16 color and 660 black and white photographs and many engraved drawings.
