The plate remains in fine condition with no chips or cracks, a nice bright original glaze and is boldly marked by Rowland & Marsellus and T. F. Foss & Sons of Portland. Known by local historians to have been a personal friend of Civil War hero Joshua Chamberlain, Longfellow is better known to history as the best loved American poet of the 19th Century. This wonderful 1 inch deep rolled rim plate offers a center image of Longfellow's Early Home in Portland, Maine with six scenes around the rim. They are Longfellow's Birthplace, a bust image of Longfellow, Portland Head-Light, Deering's Woods, Stephen Longfellow, the Poet's Father, and the Portland Longfellow Monument.
