Victorian "Extra Grade" Wooten Desk

Fabulous "Extra Grade" Renaissance Revival walnut Victorian Wooten desk. Standard grade Wooten desks occasionally appear on the market but we seldom see the more elaborate extra grade desks. This piece was passed down from one generation to the next in the Wallace family of Jamestown, PA. There is an original silver presentation plaque above the roll. They moved to Florida and recently decided to sell this wonderful piece. We obtained it in untouched condition. The finish was very dry and flaked. We had it professionally polished with hand rubbed shellac. Most Wooten desks on the market today have been extensively restored and refinished. This one retains it's original rich patina and has never been stripped. All of the fancy cast brass hardware is original. The letter slots in front have the following mottos: "Manufactured by the Wooten Desk Co, Indianapolis, Ind, Pat. Oct. 6. 1874" and "Letters" (see photos). The desk is decorated by extensive carvings and raised burled panels with black and gold high lights. The lid of the desk and interior drawers have birds eye maple fronts. It has the original card board files on the right side with brass ring pulls. We had a gold tooled leather writing surface installed. The back of the desk is finished. It rests on large metal castors. The right side drops a minute amount when the desk is open so it has to be lifted in order to close the desk. This is the desk for the serious collector - in excellent original condition with wonderful provenance!Circa: 1875Dimensions: 75"H x 42.5"W (closed) x 32"D (base)Finish: Excellent polished originalPrice: $69,500.00

Rare Secretary by H. H. Wiggers

Rare walnut Victorian secretary signed "Pat Feb 6, (18)77 H.H. Wiggers, Kearney & Wiggers Manufacturers, Cin'ti, O." This desk is in all original condition. The interior of the desk has four drawers in the middle and cubbies on the sides. The drawer fronts and tops of the cubbies are beautifully appointed with birdseye maple fronts. The desk has the original maroon fabric on the writing surface. The fabric is stained and could easily be replaced with a piece of leather. On such an original historically important piece we elected to keep it original and let the buyer decide on this. The desk sits on four columns with clover leaf cutouts in the base. It has a finished back. The following information was obtained from the Smithsonian Institute. "On 6 February 1877, Henry H. Wiggers of Cincinnati patented another variety of the Wooton-type desk. The patent specification for this desk or secre- tary stipulated that it was provided with a pair of hinged covers coupled to a sliding member in such a manner that the advancement of said slide causes the cornered style of the Fallows desk (illustrated in "Wisconsin Magazine of History" Vol. 35, No. 4 [Summer, 1952, p. 276), which is labeled "Moore's cabinet desk, Indianapolis, Indiana, Patented Jan. 8, 1878. (This desk) patented by Henry H. Wiggers of Cincinnati, Ohio, 6 February 1877, now in the Heinz House, Greenfield Village, Dearborn, Michigan. was listed as the Wooton Desk Manufacturing Com- pany." In fact, the 1870-1885 period was a most dynamic period in American furniture design. Moore, Wooten, Wiggins and others inundated the US Patent office with a number of innovative and interesting designs. We have never had this particular desk before. We believe it to be an important example of Victorian furniture design. Circa: 1877 Dimensions: 58"H x 33.5"W (closed) x 23"D Finish: Fair to Good original untouched condition Price: $4950.00

Wooton: wootdesk
Rare Superior Grade Wooton Desk c. 1874

Extremely Rare Superior Grade Wooton Patent Secretary with highly carved winged griffin gallery. It features beautiful carvings on the doors and inlaid writing board. This extant example illustrates the finest quality of Victorian age craftsmanship. c.1874. 80"W x 27"D x 73"H. Please see our website for more information on Wooton desks, their history, and who used them. These elaborate desks were designed and patented by William S. Wooton, born in 1835, the 8th of 13 children. In 1870 he formed the Wooton Desk Company after winning a $5 first prize for a school house desk at the Indiana State Fair for which he applied and was granted a U.S. patent in 1868 (#83,896 ). His most important patent #155,604 was granted on October 6, 1874 for "Wooton's Patent Cabinet Office Secretary". This ingenuity lead to full scale production in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1874 and continued through 1891, although Wooton retired and became a preacher in 1884. He died in 1907 at the age of 72. Wooton's patents merged fine hand craftsmanship with the new technologies of the Industrial Revolution. The design of the desks provided an ingenious solution to the businessman's increasing problem of organization to keep up with the rapid expansion and growing complexity of business during this historical period. Wooton’s list of recorded customers demonstrates his accurate assessment of the businessman's needs and the historical importance these desks played in the formation of American commerce. Presidents Grant, Garfield, Harrison, Queen Victoria, John D. Rockefeller, Joseph Scribner and Jay Gould were but a few of the luminaries who depended upon these desks to organize their daily routine. Even today, the Smithsonian Institution still utilizes its patent secretary, purchased new in 1876 - one hundred and twenty-four years of continuous use. Probably the most recognized piece of the Victorian Era, the Wooton desk is the centerpiece of any 19th century American furniture exhibition. Most museums have " The Desk of the Age " in their collection. A 94 page book, published in 1983, by the Indiana State and Oakland Museums, is devoted solely to the history of the Wooton Desk company and the evolution of 19th Century office. Some of our desks bear the completion date and original pencil signature of Zue Jackson, desk trimmer from Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to the patent secretary, Wooton created several distinct styles, many of which were manufactured in different quality grades. The higher the grade the greater the cost, thus the more expensive styles are much rarer today.
