Rare Massive Book Collectible Antique Dolls Illustrated

Lavishly illustrated in color and black-and-white, this rare oversize book provides an in-depth pictorial survey of collectible antique dolls. THE DOLL by Carl Fox, Harrison House, NY, 1977. This book is a comprehensive encyclopedic text on antique dolls of all types. With 191 photographic plates, 70 in full color, this early out-of-print book pictures and describes over 1,000 different dolls. These dolls represent many European countries, the U.S. and various historical periods with appropriate dress and accessories. 'There are fashion models made for queens and fancifully dressed Victorian damsels; sophisticated French ladies by the greatest doll makers of all—Jumeau, Bru, Steiner, Huret, Rohmer—and sturdy cornhusk figures made by loving hands; forlorn little dolls who have lain forgotten for decades, but who were once so fiercely cherished that they still bear the bruises of love; puppets, Kewpies, and Brownies; voodoo dolls; fetish figures from Africa; sumptuous Oriental dolls and the fascinating Indian Kachina dolls of our Southwest. The photographs are as richly varied in mood as in subject; gay or somber, dramatic or idyllic eerie or even macabre, each one is a work of art in its own right.' Other types of dolls include wax-over composition, bisque, papier-mâché, china, wax, wooden, rag, mechanical dolls, and more. Other makers include Kestner, Steiff, and others. Rare Book 200 Years American European Antique Dolls

With more than 450 doll photographs and descriptions, this early out-of-print book is a comprehensive text on antique dolls – their origins, makers, and types. THE DOLLS OF YESTERDAY by Eleanor St. George, Bonanza Books, N.Y., 1948. 'From doll collectors all over the country, Mrs. St. George gathered information about their collections and photographs of their favorites. This material is in her book, together with data on almost every type of doll ever made. For example, there is, at last, the true story of the rare Joel Ellis doll; a section on Black dolls; new facts which have come to light about the Schoenhuts; the history of the lovely Jumeaus, and more new material on wax penny dolls, the English pedlars, and the strange little poppets. The various dolls described in each chapter of the book are illustrated by photographs. Here one will find pictures of all America’s doll celebrities. Notable, for example, is 'Mollie Brinkerhoff' of Revolutionary War fame; old 'Peg Wooden,' who belonged to John Nott, founder of Springfield, Vermont; Mrs. St. George’s own 'Ridiklis,' and 'Queen Victoria,' who had the honor of receiving an autograph from Helen Hayes. Many other equally famous dolls also have their photographs in the book. Although written especially for doll-collectors, the material is presented in such an entertaining fashion that others who chance upon it are likely to be charmed into joining the ranks of the doll-collecting enthusiasts.'8.2 in. x 11.1 in. hardback with dust cover in very good condition. 204 pages.Free media mail shipping and handling for deliveries within the 48 United States. Antique Doll Types Makers 460+ ea Pictures Scarce Book

THE COLLECTOR'S HISTORY OF DOLLS by Constance Eileen King, Bonanza Books, 1977.This scarce out-of-print book features more than 460 illustrations, 30 in vivid color with captions that give complete details about each doll with size, marks, and attribution. 'Though defined as a representation of the human form to be played with as a toy by a child, the doll is here examined in its widest sense, and includes such items as piano babies, bathing beauties, boudoir dolls, fashion and crèche figures, all of which now fall within the ever-widening ambit of the collector….An attempt is made to give breadth to the survey by the inclusion of related prints and paintings. The development of such substances as rubber, celluloid and plastic all had an effect on the evolution of the doll, whose design changed significantly in adaptation to the new medium. Some of the finest dolls were produced in the 19th century, and it is this period that now most fascinates antique collectors, as purchase is still possible. The largest section is therefore devoted to this time, and dolls that the new collector can acquire quite cheaply, as well as the valuable and rare, are discussed. Until now little has been written about the English dollmakers, but here for instance the products of Deans Rag Book Company are traced from previously unpublished research.' Interestingly presented, this in-depth study of the development of doll is an essential reference book for the collector, dealer, or curator of dolls and will appeal to the general public and the social historian as well.
