This piece measures 4" across the base, 3 1/4" across the lid, and 2 1/4" high. It is in excellent shape with a single small dent in the lid and a tiny ding on the bottom edge of the base. The finish is intact but for one or two minor breaks or moderate scratches. There is hard-to-remove tarnish (or wear) inside the base. There is tarnish around the decoration, although I believe a little handiwork will remove it. I think it is safe to say that the wear to this piece is less than would be expected for its age.
Markings, from top to bottom: the words Trade Mark, a crown with 18 and 83 on either side, F B Rogers Silver Co., Taunton, Mass, Quadruple, 094. There is a hand engraving that looks to me like a script W B, an underline, and what could be the word Eagle (which was a later mark of Rogers Bros). I have searched the Internet and have not found another such piece, and would consider this one to be quite rare. A wonderful piece for your Victorian or silver collection. |
