Circa: 1800's Condition: Used Size: 32” tall x 13 ½” wide Manufacturer: Unsigned Primitive
Up for sale is a piece off of a 19th century yarn winder. We found it tucked in a corner in the back of a shed at an estate sale and thought it would make a great primitive wall display. The back, sides, and base appear to be made of pine and it looks like oak for the hub and gears. The majority is held together with wood dowels. Holding the sides and springboard are what appear to be square nails. There is a 20th century 3 ½ inch double-headed nail through the hub. However we don’t believe this is original to the item. We have attached to the back a metal picture hanger for hanging this on the wall. When hung on the wall, the base makes a perfect 13 inch by 5 inch shelf for displaying your small primitive items. Originally the operation would have been: turning the hub turns the worm gear which turn turns the sprocket gear. Once every revolution a post on the sprocket pushes against a long thin board that snaps back against a resting post on the backboard making a clicking sound. The overall dimensions are 32 inches tall by 13 ½ inches wide by 5 3/8 inches deep. The base measures 13 ½" by 5 3/8" by 2" and has 3 drilled holes 1 inch in diameter possibly for legs if you wish to sit this on the floor. The handle is 4 3/8" by 1 1/8" tapered with 1 ¼" by 5/8 taper plug to insert into the top of the back. The hub on the side is 3 ½" thick by 3 5/16" diameter with 6 holes 11/16" diameter where the spokes would have gone. The worm gear has 4 threads with ¼ inch peak to peak and the gear is 4 3/8" diameter by 5/8" thick. Displaying this yarn winder on your wall is a great way to recycle. It looks fabulous.
