Circa: circa 1900 Condition: Used Size: 4 inches overall Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Yale
Here is a Heart shaped switch lock or signal lock made by Yale. We are not lock collectors and have limited knowledge in this area but we sincerely believe this lock is from the late 1800’s. According to the U.S. patent website, Yale first used the logo trademark displayed on this lock in 1902 but listed another trademark described merely as a typed Yale logo trademark in 1875. Judging by the construction we observe in this lock we believe it was made in between these years. The only identifying mark on this lock is the Yale trademark however it is very similar in style to the locks used by the various railroads in that era. The shank is made of round steel measuring slightly over ¼ inch in diameter and is 1 inch across. The pivot or hinge point appears to have been hand formed. The body is a 3-piece sandwich construction and is completely made of brass or bronze including the rivets, which appear to be hand set. The front and back face features a dimpled surface. The edges of both cover plates show evidence of hand sawing and filing. The back has a riveted strap with the Yale trademark and a swivel on the end for a chain. The face has a weather plate covering the keyhole, which is spring loaded. The shape of the keyhole is similar to a single quotation mark. The body is heart shaped and measures 2 5/8 inches wide by 2 3/8 inches high by 5/8 inch thick. The body has been coated in silver paint, which is 95 percent complete. Unfortunately we do not have the key for this fabulous antique heart shaped switch or signal lock. This is a must have for the collector of antique locks.
