This is a very special and rare, round in shape, antique print titled, "Madonna of the Magnificat". This picture was originally painted by the Italian Renaissance master, Sandro Botticelli, executed in 1481. It is currently housed in the Uffiza in Florence, Italy. The picture portrays the Virgin Mary being crowned by two beautiful angels. The Child Jesus can be seen holding a pomegranate in his hand, which symbolizes the Resurrection. This crisp and clear print has wonderful details everywhere you look and the colors are bright, vibrant, and rich. The scene is radiant with positive energy, creating a sense of divine beauty. This print is in excellent original condition. Original, round, molded wood frame with a nice gold and black painted original finish. The frame is also in excellent original condition. Original glass, paper backing, and old wire hanger. The paper backing retains its 2 original labels. One is the framer's label reading, "The Famous L.M.C.; Picture & Mirror Frames; L.M. Castner Co.; Williamsport, PA" and the other label is half torn off, but reads the artist’s name, title, and where the original painting is being housed and displayed. Circa 1920’s.
*** I’ve included, below, some interesting INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PICTURE, "MADONNA OF THE MAGNIFICAT":
"The painting portrays the family of Piero de' Medici, lord of Florence from 1492. His wife Lucrezia Tornabuoni as Mary, Lorenzo de' Medici as the young man with the ink-pot, flanked by his brother Giuliano de' Medici who is holding a book. Behind the two boys is Maria, while the two elder sisters are holding the crown in the background: Bianca on the left and Nannina on the right. The newborn would be the daughter of Lorenzo, Lucrezia de' Medici."
*** I’ve also included, below, some information about THE MEANING BEHIND THE POMEGRANATE FRUIT:
"For the same reasons, pomegranates are a motif found in Christian religious decoration. They are often woven into the fabric of vestments and liturgical or wrought in metalwork. Pomegranates figure in many religious paintings by the likes of Sandro Botticelli and Leonardo da Vinci, often in the hands of the Virgin Mary or the infant Jesus. The fruit, broken or bursting open, is a symbol of the fullness of his suffering and resurrection. In the eastern Orthodox Church, pomegranate seeds may be used in kolyva, a dish prepared for memorial services, as a symbol of the sweetness of the heavenly kingdom."
