Circa: 1910 Condition: Excellent Condition Size: Frame Measurements: Height - 17” Width - 13” Manufacturer: Leiber This is a very appealing antique chromolithograph print featuring St. Anthony of Padua (known as the "Franciscan wonder-worker") lovingly embracing Baby Jesus in his arms. Jesus looks up into the eyes of St. Anthony and in the most adoring of ways, so gently touches his face, ready to give him a kiss. This is a famous scene that has a lot of rich history. (I’ve included more info below this description) This picture radiates with love, beauty, and a divine inspiration. Beside Jesus, sits an open Bible on the table. They appear to be in a type of Church or Temple. Jesus holds the stem of a beautiful bouquet of white lilies that are displayed behind him, symbolic of the Holy Trinity, as well as purity and chastity.

Many scriptures and religious literature has established this flower as an iconographic attribute of the Virgin Mary. The three petals of the heraldic design reflect a widespread association with the Holy Trinity, a tradition going back to 14th century France, added onto the earlier belief that they also represented faith, wisdom and chivalry. Also in the background, is a standing crucifix and some books on a shelf. The angelic faces of Jesus and St. Anthony are finely detailed and very expressive. Both of their halo’s and the Bible shine with gold highlights. The colors in this picture are bright, crisp, and vibrant and the print itself has a shiny, glossy appearance. The bottom left corner of this print, partially covered by the frame, is stamped with the artist’s name, "Leiber". There is a very small tear at the bottom center of this print and one faint crease running horizontally across the middle. The tear and crease are barely visible and only from a certain angle and light can you even see them. Old, gold-painted molded wood frame. The frame nicely compliments this print with its fine, decorative, hunter green pin striping. Overall, the print and frame are in excellent condition with very minor age-appropriate wear. Glass. New wire hanger. Circa 1910.
***I‘ve also included, below, some info about the famous Saint Anthony of Padua and info about this particular scene:
"Anthony’s parents were very rich and wanted him to be a great nobleman. But he wanted to be poor for the sake of Jesus, so he became a Franciscan. Anthony was a great preacher. He was sent out as a missionary in many cities in Italy and France. He brought many sinners back to God through his preaching, prayer, and good example. One day, when Anthony was praying, the Infant Jesus appeared to him, put His little arms around his neck, and kissed him. This wonderful favor was given to him because he kept his soul from sin and because he loved Jesus very much. Over and over again, God called him to something new in his plan. Each time, Anthony answered with zeal to serve his Lord Jesus with all his heart. Anthony died in a monastery near Padua in 1231 at the age of thirty-six. Many miracles took place after his death. Even today, he is called the ‘wonder-worker’."

"Whenever Saint Anthony spoke of Jesus, everyone listened and loved the Savior, too. One night, the Divine Child came to visit Anthony. He kissed the saint gently and told him how much He loved him. You have often seen statues of St. Anthony with the Child in his arms. Ever since his death, he has done wonderful things for those who pray to him. His Feast Day is: June 13th."
