Circa: 1898 Manufacturer: New York Monthly Company Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's a photo of the Gunboat Castine, with the other a drawing or picture representing a Modern Naval Battle.

The naval battle picture, as stated underneath, includes drawings of Bell and Mushroom Bottom Mines and an anchored mine with tidal adjustment. The naval battle picture shown is one-half of what was the original picture as the remainder was included on the next page of the book which appears in item #1274, on the reverse side in the listing of the book page with the Fleet of Monitors at League Island Navy Yard.
The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). No copyright dates appear on the book pages. There is a paragraph describing each ship or drawing under it's picture.
Excellent condition black & white photograph/drawing, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No tears, major bending, or yellowing. There is very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed). On the picture representing the naval battle, on the right side along and near the side edge you can see the incompleteness of the image, with white spotting in the gray in a vertical area along the full picture edge here; our guess is that this is how the page was printed/made due to incomplete application of ink across the two page drawing, although it is possible that it could be some sort of surface page wear here (note that this spotting/incompleteness does not appear on the second half of the drawing which is shown as item #1274). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.
The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.
