Circa: 1997 Condition: New Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: United States Postal Svc. This 32¢ stamp honors Padre Felix Varela, social reformer. Born in Cuba in 1788, he spent his childhood in St. Augustine. After returning to Havana, he became an educator, philosopher, writer, patriot, and legislator. He argued for giving women the same education as men, an end to slavery, and was a defender of immigrant rights and of the poor. He died in the U.S. in 1853.
