This is a good old hand forged grafting froe of knife. Most likely forged from an old file or similar tool, with a good solid tang going all the way through the wood handle and bent over on the end of the tang to hold the wood handle in place, a common way to hold the handle in the 1800's era. The wood handle may need a little work if you intend to use this tool, otherwise the handle is well attached, but has some splits in the grain that cause it to be alittle loose, however it is not cracked in halp, still in one piece. At we understand it, this tool was made to cut into the lower trunk area of a tree or shrub, for the purpose of introducing a new grafted limb in that area. There is a rounded cutting edge that is 5" long, is well formed but has not been sharpened for many years. It is fairly sharp, but need the cutting edge smoothed and honed sharp. The tip that is shaped much like a slot screwdriver tip is solid, and has a little wear at the tip mostly. An interesting hand made tool! |
