Circa: early 1900's-1940's Condition: Good++ Manufacturer: Greene - Tweed & Co. New York U.S.A.
This is a top quality used rawhide tipped weighted mallet with the metal head that has 2" diameter holes so that new 2" rawhide inserts can be inserted when needed. Most new 2" inserts made today are about 1/32" oversize, so with a little sanding or filing, new ones can be easily press fit into place, and they stay in very well because of the reverse taper in the metal head hole. It is in good condition overall, the rawhide tips are in very good to new condition, like new on the outside striking area. The inserts are about 1-1/2" long and can be used on both sides. This one has the 2" diameter raw-hide inserts in it. The handle is in very good shape, very well attached to the metal head. The one weighs 4.5 pounds and is marked "GREENE-TWEED DEFENSE HAMMER U.S.A. NO. 4" in raised cast lettering on the split head area. Greene - Tweed made mallets dating back to 1893, and we assume this one was made for military use either WWI or WWII. Very nice, very clean, ready to use! Very Rare! |
