Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. A life-size playmate for little girls, 35-inch Patti Playpal was one of the most popular playthings of the early 1960s. Introduced by Ideal in 1959, this vinyl doll was realistically sculpted to resemble a human child by one of the foremost sculptors of the era, Neil Estern, as were the siblings and friendsPeter Playpal, Saucy Walker, Bye Bye Baby, Penny Playpal, Suzy Playpal, Bonnie and Johnny, Shirley Temple and Patti Pattitethat quickly followed. This definitive book traces the history of these dolls, with extensive notes on markings, clothing, hair colors and styles. Other companion dolls of the period, such as the Alexander Doll Company's Joanie, Janie and Timmy, the American Character Doll Company's Betsy McCall family and Ideal's Lori Martin are also discussed. The authors, longtime Patti collectors and experts, collaboratively provide a look at rare examples and outfits, share newly discovered information and present guidelines for caring for, preserving and displaying these dolls.

Interviews with Neil Estern and his wife, Anne, who designed many of the dolls' outfits, provide insights into the creation of the doll and the sculpting process; more than 275 breathtaking color photographs celebrate these classic American playthings of an earlier era. The Art of Patti Playpal is sure to appeal to collectors, doll makers and all those who have fond memories of childhood hours spent with Patti Playpal and her family.
