Circa: 1912
Condition: Excellent Original Condition
Size: Frame Measurements: Height - 22 5/8” Width - 18 3/8”
Manufacturer: Joseph Hoover & Sons, Philadelphia
This is a stunning and large antique print featuring the classical "Rock of Ages" scene, titled "My Hope" and dated "1912". This picture depicts a woman in the ominous sea clinging to a large cross as the waves crash upon her. The bottom right hand corner of this print has the publisher's name, "Joseph Hoover & Sons, Philadelphia". Heavenly light shines brilliantly down upon the woman and the stone cross. And in the forefront of this print, a person’s hand reaches out of the water as a piece of their sunken boat drifts by. As distressing as this picture may appear, I personally believe that it represents the power and miracles of prayer, faith, and hope.

This intriguing picture has a lot of history, legend, and may offer a different interpretation to each person. This print is in excellent original condition, except for a very small ripple only at the top and three tiny little holes at the very top near the frame. This is very unnoticeable. The shapely molded wood frame has a beautiful oak grained finish. The frame is original to the print and is in excellent condition. This piece retains its original glass, nice old backing, and original wire hanger. Circa 1912.

*** I've included some interesting information about the famous PUBLISHER of this print, JOSEPH HOOVER & SONS:

"Joseph Hoover started his career making elaborate wood frames in Philadelphia in 1856, but within a decade or so he began to produce popular prints. Initially he mostly worked for other publishers, including Duval & Hunter, but he also issued a number of hand-colored, popular prints. During the Centennial, Hoover won a medal for excellence for his chromolithographs after Queen's renderings, and in the 1880s, he and his sons began to print chromolithographs exclusively, with an average annual production of between 600,000 to 700,000 pictures."

*** Included below is a little information about the ‘ROCK OF AGES’ SCENE:

There are several interpretations of this scene. One is that while the girl is clinging to the stone cross in the middle of the roaring ocean, there is a ship sinking in the background entitled, ‘Rock of Ages’. It’s supposed to represent everything from the women holding onto the cross of Christ as her last and final hope to the "Sailor’s Graveyard" and a crying wife whose husband was killed at sea with a large tombstone of the cross marking his grave in the deep and that’s all she has left to hold onto.

The ‘Rock of Ages’ symbolized faith.

It’s also been said to represent a person or soul who is lost in the ‘sea of sin’, whose only hope is to cling to Christ’s cross (the Rock of Ages).

In addition, it’s said that the Rock of Ages celebrates a milestone in the faith of living women and memorialize the dead, creating a nexus of meaning among hymn, women, and graveyards.

*** I’ve also included, below, some intriguing HISTORY ABOUT ‘THE ROCK OF AGES’ HYMN, as well as HOW THE HYMN WAS CREATED BY TOPLADY:

Sir William Henry Wills, in a letter to Dean Lefroy, published in the London Times in June, 1898, says that "Toplady was one day overtaken by a thunderstorm in Burrington Coombe, on the edge of my property, Blagdon, a rocky glen running up into the heart of the Mendip range, and there, taking shelter between two massive piers of our native limestone rock, he penned the hymn, ‘Rock of Ages, cleft for me; Let me hide myself in Thee’. There is a precipitous crag of limestone a hundred feet high, and right down its centre is the deep recess in which Toplady sheltered."

In the book, "Hymns That Have Helped", the author, W.T. Stead stated:
"…when the London went down in the Bay of Biscay, January 11, 1866, the last thing which the last man who left the ship heard as the boat pushed off from the doomed vessel was the voices of the passengers singing ‘Rock of Ages’."

The hymn was sung at the funeral of William Gladstone in Westminster Abby, London, England. Prince Albert of Britain asked it be sung to him as he lay dying. The hymn was also reportedly sung at the funeral of American President Benjamin Harrison because it was his favorite hymn, and the only one he ever tried to sing.

*** Below is THE COMPLETE HYMN, ROCK OF AGES:

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labor of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law’s demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
