Circa: early 1900's Condition: antique - as found - used Color: old chippy yellow paint Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Unknown American Crafted Antique I was with a friend who had called and talked me into going on an expedition for the purpose of try out his new metal detector. I had a lot of paperwork I should have been doing, but it was a beautiful day, so i said I would go if I got to choose the test sight. A few months back another old farm was torn down in order to make room for another few dozen cookie cutter houses and i wanted to dig around in the dirt before the bulldozers covered any pieces of the past under tons of hot asphalt.

There wasn't much left of what had once been a lovely old barn, just enough of the old stone foundation to remind me what it used to look like. I was turning over rocks and looking under broken bits of wood when I heard my friend let out an excited yell. "Holy crap," he shouted. "I think I hit the mother load." Well to make a long story short, what my friend had found with his excellent new metal detector turned out to be parts of several old weathervanes and lightning rods. The glass balls were all in pieces, but under the rust and the dust we found several old iron figures which were in various states of distress. This auction features the first of those pieces. It has been cleaned a bit and the worst of the dirt brushed away, but what you see here is pretty much the way this old rooster looked that day we found it. Along with the rust is a bit of old yellow paint and even some red remains. The rooster stands 12 inches tall and is welded to a foot long piece of 1/4 inch iron rod. He is 10 inches wide and about an eighth inch thick. What you see is what we found and what you'll get if you are the winner of this auction. A rusty, but still very nice after all these years old farm found rooster weathervane figure. |
