Circa: 1935 Condition: Used Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Unmarked This drawing depicts Howie Morenz in action with the Chicago Blackhawks in 1935. Howard William Morenz (1902-37) played in the NHL from 1923-37. Twelve of his fourteen seasons were with the Montreal Canadiens. He was known for his reckless speed and his headlong rushes. He scored 270 goals and added 197 assists in his NHL career. He led the Canadiens in scoring for seven consecutive seasons and won the Hart Trophy and Stanley Cup three times. Morenz tragically died in a hospital from complications after he was injured in a game in 1937. He was elected to the Hockey Hall Of Fame in 1945. The drawing measures 7½" x 11 3/8". It was autographed by Morenz in 1935. He signed in the lower center in black ink, below his skates. The autograph is bold and clean.
The artist was my father, Arthur Haas, who lived in New York City until 1938. A commercial artist by trade and a huge sports fan, he would render the players' action poses in charcoal and pen & ink. There is an interesting story behind this autograph. My dad had done several drawings of team individuals from the Chicago Blackhawks.

He was standing outside the locker room, when a player came out to look at what my dad had brought. The man was amazed. And why, for goodness sake, have each player come to the door to see their image? My dad was invited into the inner sanctum of the locker room. About 45 minutes later, he left. The guys had all marveled at my father’s artistic ability and then invited him to stay awhile to shoot the breeze.
At this meeting, Morenz and Lorne Chabot got confused and signed the other's drawing. Then they both signed their own. My father, for reasons known only to him, did not feel Chabot's signature should be on Morenz' drawing, so he painted it out. The buyer could have the Chabot autograph restored, if desired. This piece was done on heavy weight drawing paper, and may have been sprayed with a fixatif. It is signed and dated by my dad. We are pricing this as if it were an autographed 8 x 10 photo, since my dad was an unknown artist. Although, unlike sports cards or photographs, this is unique and one-of-a-kind! We are also taking into consideration the fascinating backstory.
The autograph has not and will not be ‘certified’. This would require my sending it away so it can be looked over with a loupe, only to be told what I already know – that it is authentic. Any buyer will have two weeks to have the autograph certified if they desire it. And as always, your purchase may be returned for any reason for a full refund. (But not if restoration is attempted.) This item will be shipped flat by Priority Mail, UPS, or FedEx. Insurance will be required. |
