Circa: 1935 Condition: Used Country of Origin: United States Manufacturer: Unmarked This drawing depicts Lorne Chabot in 1935 when he was with the Chicago Blackhawks. Chabot (1900-1947) was one of the best goaltenders in the history of the game. He was a member of two Stanley Cup-winning teams - the New York Rangers in 1928 and the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1932. He was an NHL All Star and Vezina trophy winner in 1935. He was so sharp with his eyes that in Toronto they used to call him "Eagle-eye". The drawing measures 9" x 14". It was signed by Chabot in 1935. He signed above and to the left of his head in black ink.
The artist was my father, Arthur Haas, who lived in New York City until 1938. A commercial artist by trade and a huge sports fan, he would render the players' action poses in charcoal and pen & ink. There is an interesting story behind this autograph. My dad had done several drawings of team individuals from the Chicago Blackhawks. He was standing outside the locker room, when a player came out to look at what my dad had brought. The man was amazed. And why, for goodness sake, have each player come to the door to see their image? My dad was invited into the inner sanctum of the locker room. About 45 minutes later, he left.

The guys had all marveled at my father’s artistic ability and then invited him to stay awhile to shoot the breeze.
At this meeting, Chabot and Howie Morenz got confused and signed the other's drawing. Then they both signed their own. This piece was done on heavy weight drawing paper, and may have been sprayed with a fixatif. It is signed and dated by my dad. There is a faint water stain and the left side of each autograph is affected. This condition is reflected in our price. We are pricing this as if it were an autographed 8 x 10 photo, since my dad was an unknown artist. We are also taking into consideration the fascinating backstory and the two signatures. Unlike sports cards or photographs, this is unique and one-of-a-kind!
The autograph has not and will not be ‘certified’. This would require my sending it away so it can be looked over with a loupe, only to be told what I already know – that it is authentic. Any buyer will have two weeks to have the autograph certified if they desire it. And as always, your purchase may be returned for any reason for a full refund. (But not if restoration is attempted.) This item will be shipped flat by Priority Mail, UPS, or FedEx. Insurance will be required. |
