St. George Slaying the Dragon Stove Tile
This tile depicts a classic and historical scene - of Saint George Slaying the Dragon. It measures 6" x 8" and is 3/4" thick. Depicts a knight on horseback - with his lance going into a dragon that is beneath the horse. There is a Latin phrase just over his head.
This are several firing cracks on the back - and remnants of either kiln blobs or an installation on the sides of the tile. Molded design in raised line. Green majolica glaze. Age and country of origin are unknown. This handmade tile does not lay flat - there is an upward curve to the piece. A fascinating example of timeless subject matter. (#T-2078)

Great Vintage Tile of a Gazelle
Outstanding glaze colors on this hand painted tile with a central design of a sleek gazelle. The cobalt blue is vibrant, and the gold is shimmery. Done on a blank by the Wheeling Tile Company, of Wheeling, West Virginia. Measures 6" in diameter. Probably made in the 1950's-60's. The tile is in great condition. (#1851)

Stylized Bird of Prey / Falcon Tile
Very neat looking bird of prey, maybe a falcon, on this nicely glazed large tile. Measures 7 5/8" square by 1/2" thick - hand made and molded in relief. Pleasing brown high glazes. Crazing line on left self framing edge, and a glazed over firing line on the left side. Two really tiny glaze nicks on the outside edges. Generally in very nice condition. Age is unknown, although I believe this to be fairly new. (#T-1101)

Antique Hand Painted Tile Bluebirds
This is a well executed painting of three bluebirds sitting on pine tree branches. Signed in the lower right corner - E. Thorne. Painted on a National Tile Company tile, - with a patent date of December 3, 1907. The National Tile Company was in business, in Anderson, Indiana, from 1903 -1966 - so this was done in the earlier years of the company. There are some small impurities on the tile surface (near the center) - difficult to see unless the tile is tilted at an angle. The tile measures 6" square - the framed dimensions are 7 1/2" square. Full lion profile - matte celadon glaze in background - beautifully molded in relief matte white lion. Marked HN and 14 on the back Measures 4" x 9" 1" thick. Minor edge roughness - generally extremely nice condition. I believe this to be from circa 1900-1925. (#T-2061)

Awesome Retro Cat Tile
Great vibrant glaze colors on this whimsical tile of a cat. Probably circa 1930's-40's. Maker is unknown. Done in wax resist technique. Measures 9" square and is in excellent condition.
I think it says "Giers" on the back - as well as 500.00. (#T1108)

Chinese Dragon Tile in Silk Presentation Box
This is an unusual ceramic tile paperweight in a silk box. The round tile is a heavy pottery - intricate molded design of a Chinese dragon - nice large self framing edge - goldish brown majolica glaze. This came in a silk covered box with an ivory (or ivory type) clasp. Lined in a shiny red material - the red silk sidestrap needs to be re-attached at the bottom. The tile measures 5 3/4" in diameter and almost 3/4" thick. The box 6 1/4" square by 1 1/2" thick. I believe these to be Chinese and probably from the 1940's or 1950's. Both the box and the tile are in very nice condition. (#T-1393)

Giraffe & Squirrel Whimsical Tile
Great retro / vintage tile with a giraffe, a squirrel and another cute animal. Hand made - measures 3 3/4" square - the animal outlines are raised. The glaze is a fun mustard color (a lot like a bright Dijon!). Incised by the artist - D. Williamson and dated 1944. In excellent condition. Wonderful for a child's room or your fun and funky house! Santa Monica Tile (Taylor) - Whimsical Bird #2
Great whimsical dodo bird type beast on this vintage tile made by Taylor Tilery, of Los Angeles, California. This is a part of their line of Santa Monica Tiles. Done on a white clay dust pressed blank, they called these "novelty inserts" in one of their trade catalogs. Nice glazes of blue, green, yellow, gray and cream. Measures 4 1/4" square - circa 1930. Three very small nicks on the outside edges - generally in very nice condition. (#1102)

Three Moravian Pottery Zodiac Brocade Tiles
Nice set of three tiles, made by the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, of Doylestown, Pennsylvania. Each measures approx. 2 1/2", both ways. The blue fish, representing Pisces (I think) is a high glaze blue and is dated 1989. The other fish is a semi-matte gold glaze and is dated 1990. The crab tile - representing Cancer, is a matte green and is dated 1990. All three are in excellent condition. (#T-2074)

True vintage tile made by the Moravian Pottery & Tile Works, circa 1920. From a series of Zodiac tiles, this is Aries, the ram. Measures 4" by 2 3/4" - this is done with a blue background in the recesses, and the ram is unglazed red clay. Excellent condition. (#1032)

Vintage Hand Painted Great Dane Tile
Fabulous portrait of a Great Dane dog on this 6" square tile. Done on an English Thynne tile blank, this was hand painted and signed F. Vosmansky. Probably circa 1950 - perhaps a tad earlier, this is in outstanding condition. Set into a metal trivet, but easily removed from that if you prefer. (#T-1145)

Greek Goat Studio Art Tile
Very nicely executed art tile of a horned "Greek goat". This round tile has a diameter of 6" and is mounted in a new wood frame, with a total measurement of 10" square. Carved in relief, the goat and border are done in a high glaze gold yellow, and the recesses are in a light turquoise. Signed and dated on the back - incised marks of " Betty Kline T-Th 1-2 Mar. 12, 1935. Greek Goat ". In excellent condition. (#T-1230)

Round Baltimore Oriole Tile by Wheeling
Done with a raised line technique, this is a really attractive tile made by the Wheeling Tile Company, of Wheeling, West Virginia, probably around the 1930's. This measures 6" in diameter and 3/8" thick. Cork applied to the back - but no mark visible. Nice matte glazes - minor wear to the raised lines and a slight wearing to the tile's edge. (#1710)

Vintage Whimsical Wheeling Tiles with Horses
Great pair of vintage tiles depicting amusing scenes with horses and riders. These were hand painted on tile blanks from Wheeling Tile Company, in Wheeling, West Virginia. Oval tiles - each measuring 6 1/8" x 4 1/4". Painted in black and gray on a creamy white background, to resemble a cartoon illustration. One tile shows a man on a horse stuck halfway over a fence with the phrase "OK Now what" and the other shows a rider coming out of the Riding Academy, read to go, and his horse is cringing on the ground hiding from him. Both were painted by "Kitty" in the 1950's. Minor chip on bottom edge of one tile - generally both are in nice condition. (#1290)

Terra Cotta Fish Tile
This unique tile has nice high relief on the designs, about 3/8". Depicts a goldfish, or a carp, with whimsical water lines. Measures 7 ½" square – total depth is ¾". Unmarked – age and maker unknown. Minor nicks on the high relief, chip on upper right corner. Great for an outdoor garden or water feature. (#NC012)

American Encaustic Art Deco Man on Horse Tile
A great tile depicting a colorful man riding a great horse! Made by the American Encaustic Tiling Company, of Zanesville, OH, ca 1920. Press molded design with a metallic silver glaze outlining the man, the horse, and the edge designs. Measuring 4 ¼" x ½" thick, this is in excellent condition. The back is very cool - as it has not only the company logo, the pattern number, the design number, a date (?), and a list of the glazes used on the tile - very unusual. I also have three other tiles in this series for sale. (#T-1173)
