Randy Rowe painting of Rooster, hen & 6 chicks 18 X 22 frame X 13 1/2 X 17 1/2 image J Randolph [Randy]Rowe (American 1922-1978),
opaque gouache on panel of white rooster and hen with 6 chicks, signed

Much information about J Randy Rowe can be found on SCOUTERS PAGE, from which the following was copied;

Randy Rowe couldn't walk across your living room without help, but everyone he touched is far better off because Randy quietly brushed by. And, although he's gone now, his memory and his art remain to inspire us."

In 1968 when originally commissioned to do a cigarstore Indian, he rejected the stiff image of the adorned and phony native and carved "Blue Nose," replica of a Delaware Indian. "Blue Nose," is now part of the permanent collection of the Reading Public Museum & Art Gallery, Reading, PA.

His works have been exhibited in the William Penn Memorial Museum in Harrisburg, the Atlantic Flyway Waterfowl Carving & Arts Exhibition in Salisbury, Maryland and the Third Biennial American Bird Carving Exhibition in Chestertown, MD.

During May of 1970 his works were displayed in a one man show at the Berks County Historical Society, and at the William Penn Memorial Museum in Harrisburg in 1971.

His carved Bald Eagle is the official emblem of the National Rifle Association, Washington, D.C

I personally met Randy in the mid 70's and he left a profound impression on me and my wife. His love of nature, wildlife and art deeply influenced our lives.

born on King Island, Alaska, resided in
Nome, Alaska

Bernard was a noted Inuit/Eskimo native artist. He did many beautiful drawings and created prints from same. He also scrimshawed walrus ivory.
This tusk shows many facets of life near and on the sea and depicts life as it was on the King Island. He shows whale hunting and butchering the carcass, seal hunting, crab fishing, walrus hunting, walrus in the water, sleding, a community house readying for a celebration and a view of one of the houses on stilts on a hill, so unique to the King Island.
signed and dated 1973

A little info on King Island;
The island is about 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. It was once the winter home of a group of about 200 Inupiat who called themselves Aseuluk. The Aseuluk spent their winters engaging in subsistence hunting on King Island and their summers engaging in similar activities on the mainland near the location of present-day Nome, Alaska. After the establishment of Nome, the islanders began to sell intricate carvings to residents of Nome during the summer. By 1970, all King Island people had moved to Nome year-round.
In 2005 and 2006 the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded a research project which brought a few King Island natives back to the Island. Some participants had not been back to the island in 50 years. The King Island Community eagerly awaits the projects results.
The island was discovered by Capt. James Cook in 1778 and named for Lt. James King, a member of his party. It is part of the Bering Sea unit of the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge.
