Hundreds of color and black-and-white captioned photographs supplement a rich narrative which reviews the history and production of Newcomb art pottery including information on makers and marks. 'Rooted in the World’s Industrial and Cotton Centennial of 1884-85, the Newcomb crafts – pottery, needlework, metal and leather crafts, jewelry, bookbinding, blockprinting, and calligraphy – evolved after Josephine LeMonnier Newcomb established J. Sophie Newcomb Memorial College for Women in 1887 as a part of Tulane University. Her bold dream of women’s independence through the arts and crafts flourished in the Newcomb Guild, which produced some of the finest Art Nouveau in America from 1895 to 1945.'
'The widely known Newcomb pottery, as well as the lesser-known crafts, won medals in expositions in Paris, San Francisco, and other cities, and brought financial independence to the talented women of the Newcomb Guild. Each period of the Newcomb crafts movement is carefully detailed and generously illustrated with both color and black-and-white photographs of examples of all the crafts….Biographies of the directors, ceramists, and craftsmen, along with their ciphers, are provided to enable collectors to identify and authenticate Newcomb crafts. Photographs of the people and places associated with the Crafts of the Newcomb Style add to the worth of this book, as a definitive source for collectors, libraries, and the general reader who values fine arts and crafts.'

PORCELAIN. By Jerry E. Patterson, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, 1979.
This book is part of a series on antiques and design created for the Cooper-Hewitt Museum which is Smithsonian’s National Museum of Design. In an entertaining, clear fashion, this volume 'studies the technical, social and stylistic development of porcelain from its beginnings under the T’ang dynasty in ancient China to its golden age in Europe and America. Along the way we marvel at the Ming and Ch’ing porcelains and learn how Augustus the Strong, obsessed with the beauty of Oriental porcelain, patronized the production of the first true European porcelain in eighteenth-century Germany. The book then follows the spreading popularity of porcelain across Europe to England and to America, ending with modern movements in porcelain that include the Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles…. The author opens his text with a detailed discussion of the technical processes of making hard-paste and soft-paste porcelain as well as bone china. The major factories and known modelers and designers are identified in this sweeping, often exciting story of the art of porcelain making—the temperamental German porcelain masters are described as constantly storming off from one employer to another…. A chapter on collecting, a glossary of special terms, a list of further reading and guide to public collections of porcelain, where priceless pieces can be seen, extend the usefulness of this concise work.'

This book 'has been conceived to provide the private collector for the first time with a book that deals specifically with antiques as investments.' Written by an expert in the field, the author discusses English pottery and porcelain objects that 'chosen with care and knowledge, have proved to be first-class investments, appreciating spectacularly in value in a world characterized by the cyclic inflation and devaluation of more traditional types of currency.' Chapters are arranged by region and manufactories, including Staffordshire, Wedgwood, Leeds, Chelsea, Bow, Blue and White Porcelain, Worcester, Derby, Longton Hall, Plymouth & Bristol. Attention is also given to delftware, to the work of James Giles specifically, and to later factories. The concluding chapter summarizes the advice on pottery and porcelain as an investment. EARLY AMERICAN FOLK POTTERY by Harold F. Guilland, Chilton Book Co., NY, 1971.
'Here are the utensils our forebears used – the pots, plates, jars, beakers, pitchers, bowls, crocks – and the information on how they were made and designed. [The author’s] detailed descriptions of the pottery – size, color, design, where made – and the excellent photographs make this the most valuable and comprehensive book that treats of the Colonial earthenware and stoneware tradition, American design and methods and changes from the use of earthenware in 1640 to the time of stoneware, 1700-1880, when the customs and the ensuing needs of American life altered and even the manners and mores of the time reflected in the pottery. Valuable information about techniques and processes are enlarged with examples of how the ordinary adjuncts of everyday life fit into the picture. The decoration of a plate or keg often told a story, such as the decoration on a keg which symbolized the high quality of Holland gin which had the ‘bite’ of a swordfish or the ‘sting’ of a swarm of angry bees!' The profuse illustrations, in-depth captions, and rich narrative combine to make this rare book a leading reference on the subject of antique American pottery and stoneware.
