Lobster Plates Dinner Size Bareuther China Waldsassen Bavaria Germany
These are 6 identical dinner plates with a lovely lobster design made by Bareuther China of Bavaria, Germany. They are being sold individually and are priced each. Each plate is marked on the backside with a 3 pointed crown under which is printed Bareuther, Waldsassen, Bavaria Germany . From some internet research, this mark was used by the formerly West German company from 1970-1993. We believe these plates date from the earlier part of this period, likely from the 1970s, but can't guarantee that. The vintage dishes have a white porcelain base plate (these plates are translucent) with a large red lobster transfer design in the center. When you run a finger over the lobster design you can feel that the design is raised or was applied after the base white plate was manufactured. The plates are each dinner size, measuring 10 1/4 inches in diameter and sitting about 1 inch in height on the underside base rim. What is particularly interesting is that we believe these plates were never used as they were received in and are still each individually stored in their original corrugated or cardboard shipping containers. Each container measures 10 1/2 inches square with 2 inches in depth. On each is a yellow label indicating the store where they were originally purchased, holmes' hole, martha's vineyard island, mass. (Massachusetts, MA). On the label the store has written what we believe to have been the original price for each plate, 6.49, plus LEI which we believe to be some sort of inventory code for the store. Near the labels on each box is written the word Lobster which we believe was noted by store personnel probably as a way for them to know which design of plate was in the box without opening it. If the 6.49 is indicative of the price, that could further support these as having been originally bought in the 1970's. We believe these plates to be new old stock as they look like they were never opened or used. We are selling them for a relative who received them unopened from another elderly relative, and we think that we were the first to open the cardboard from how tight it was (we had to open each of them to inspect the plates). The original owner was known to have vacationed on Martha's Vineyard. Each plate is in excellent, unused condition, with no chips, cracks, crazing, scratches, etc. The design is beautiful on each plate. We do note that on one plate a small spot or part of the transfer is missing from one of the lobster's long antennae (it appears to have incompletely transferred here). Also there are a few stray pit/pin dots in the procelain as well as tiny pin dark dots on a few of the plates. But there is nothing here to worry about, they are really neat looking in great shape. We have provided 5 images, showing both sides of one of the plates, the manufacturer marking, two of the cardboard shipping boxes and a close-up of the store sticker. For shipping purposes, each plate in it's cardboard container weighs 2 pounds unpacked. A nifty addition to any collection of lobster memorabilia or just wonderful plates to use for display or serving on their own. Could make a great gift for anyone interested in ocean or sea related items. Please note that the shipping cost information which has been entered is for the shipment of one plate. If you wish to purchase more than one, please e-mail us before placing the order since the system will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).
