Old Abe, Civil War bald eagle mascot antique bird Carte De Visite photograph. This most famous civil war legend has a long and fascinating history. This ancient bird was the mascot of Company C Eighth 8th Wisconsin Regiment.

Purchased from native American Indians and sold to a local farmer he was adopted as mascot right after the start of the war. A survivor of 42 battle engagements, Abe actually was wounded in action. Just a flesh wound, feathers.

He would fly high above the battlefield, sceaming as only an eagle can, striking fear in the hearts of the Confederacy. So much so a bounty was placed on is head. Never collected, he retired afer the war and became a spokes bird for GAR veterans. His photos were sold to raise money for them.

When old Abe finally died, he was stuffed and put on display at the Wisconsin capital building. His remians remained there until a fire partially roasted his taxidermy form. A new mount was made from Abe and another bald eagle . This composite bird is still on display there.

Lighting from my camer flash made these photos a bit more orange and dark then in reality. A nice RARE image.
