  • Classics Illustrated: The Queen's Necklace Comic Book No. 165

Avis Yuni Antiques & Collectibles

Manufacturer: Gilberton Company, Inc.
Vintage Classics Illustrated comic book by Gilberton Company, Inc. (Gilberton Publications). This is The Queen's Necklace comic book, No. 165 (Number 165) in the series with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside January 1962. We believe this one to be a first edition or first issue of this comic since the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 164 The Cossack Chief (HRN #164). Further, on the inside front cover is a large ad announcing the next book coming in the series, Tigers and Traitors, comic No. 166.

All the Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior comic books we are listing came out of the same home where they were purchased as new items for their children in the 1960's, so these are not recent reprints. The Classics Illustrated comic books are in good/very good or better condition but are definitely not mint, showing varying levels of age and wear which will be detailed. All were read and handled by children and thus show expected handling wear. All have interior pages which are browned at the edges, looking overall with an aged paper look, that is, the interior pages are not white as they would have been originally. All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing.

The Queen's Necklace comic states the author's name on the cover as Alexandre Dumas. This is a very nice copy overall. It does have usual age reading use/wear. On the cover there are many vertical line creases (we didn't see these until we looked at an angle in bright light but they are definitely there), and it looks like a child has written the capital first letter of his/her name in the background space under the Classics Illustrated box (this is done in a light gray which somewhat fades into the background, but you can see it). The comic cover as printed shows some horizontal white space at the top above the colored art, with bending/wrinkling along the top edge. There is slight wear around the staples, a fold line/crease near the bottom right corner and other general handling wear, indentations, creases, etc. The back cover appears slightly dirty with some scuffing, folding/wrinkling along the top edge and other general handling/age wear. The inside pages are clean with some dark brown discoloration at the very top of the inside back cover. On some interior pages along the top edge there is some as printed black lines or thin black rectangles. This copy includes the page detailing Alexandre Dumas, followed by two one page stories, "Who Knows?" and "The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky", after which is another 5 page full color comic, "Men of Action Caupolican".

This collectible comic book measures about 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure.

Please note that we have many other comic books listed separately for sale. If you wish to purchase more than one comic book, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).

Please Note: Comic books must be shipped via U.S.P.S. First Class Mail Package rate; they cannot be shipped via U.S.P.S. Media Mail. The post office does not permit comic books to be shipped via Media Mail due to the advertising that many include in their books. Please choose First Class Mail Package rate shipping for this item (also known as First Class Mail Parcel rate). Thank you.
