Classics Illustrated Jr: The Magic Dish Comic Book No. 558 1st Ed
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Magic Dish comic book, No. 558 (Number 558), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside February 1959. We think this is a first edition of this comic. Unlike most of the other comic books we are listing, there is no listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series. Instead the back cover has an ad for The Wonderful World of Fairy Tales on records. However, on half of the inside front cover is a prominent ad for the next comic in the series, stating Coming Next The Japanese Lantern which is shown to be comic #559 (HRN 559), along with a description of that comic. We believe that this ad for the next comic in the series and the back cover ad would not be shown in the same fashion on a reprint of The Magic Dish comic book, and that this is a first edition. This book is not a new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). All the Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior comic books we are listing came out of the same home where they were purchased as new items for their children in the 1950's and 1960's, so these are not recent reprints. The Classics Illustrated Junior comic books are generally in good/very good or acceptable reading condition but are definitely not mint, showing varying levels of age and wear which will be detailed. All were read and handled by children and thus show expected handling wear. All have interior pages which are browned at the edges, looking overall with an aged paper look, that is, the interior pages are not white as they would have been originally. All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing. Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The Magic Dish comic is an acceptable copy overall, but does have more prominent writing on the cover than any of the others we are listing. Near the magic dish (and under the Classics Illustrated Junior box) is written both the name of a child in green crayon and a capital letter (for the name of another child) printed in blue ink pen. From the writing on the bottom of the front cover, there was a question of ownership among two children as someone has printed in blue ink pen, You give me this but it is not my book (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover has been done in blue ink pen and then slightly colored in crayon (and on this inside cover you can see the reverse of the strong printing of the capital letter and the sentence at the bottom of the front cover). The coloring page on the inside back cover has been about 65% colored in light crayon, with this done in a scribbled fashion (not totally within the lines). The comic shows a lot of age reading use/wear on the cover including a large vertical wear line to white, lots of handling/wrinkling, lots of tiny creases with paper wear to white along the bound/stapled edge, diagonal creasing and corner tip wear in both right corners, wear/bending/creasing/chipping along the top, bottom and right edges, etc. The back cover has a dirty look particularly along the top edge with small tearing/bending along this edge, a large horizontal crease, lots of wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, wrinkling/small tears along the bottom and left edges, etc. The inside pages are clean but there are some issues with one later page having a 2 1/4 inch vertical tear from the bottom edge, visible bending/wrinkling along the top edges, the inside first page showing impressions from the writing on the front cover, and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes two pages illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Wolf and the Kid, one page telling the limerick There Was an Old Person of Dover by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Chinchilla on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 15/16 x 10 1/8 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Please note that we have many other comic books listed separately for sale. If you wish to purchase more than one comic book, please e-mail us before placing the order since the shipping information has been inputted for a purchase of just one and will not calculate the savings you would get when purchasing more than one shipped together in the same package (we will need to handle this for you).
Classics Illustrated Junior: Silly Willy Comic Book No. 557 1st Ed
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is the Silly Willy comic book, No. 557 (Number 557), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside December 1958. We think this is a first edition of this comic. Unlike most of the other comic books we are listing, there is no listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series. Instead the back cover has an ad for The Wonderful World of Fairy Tales on records. However, on the top half of the inside front cover is a prominent ad for the next comic in the series, stating Coming Next The Magic Dish which is shown to be comic #558 (HRN 558), along with a description of that comic. We believe that this ad for the next comic in the series and the back cover ad would not be shown in the same fashion on a reprint of the Silly Willy comic book, and that this is a first edition. Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This Silly Willy comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent writing on the cover in two places, with a child's name written in green crayon to the right of the main figure and a capital letter initial written to the left of the figure in blue pen ink (see image). There is no connect the dots picture on the inside front cover. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been about 15% colored in pencil on the shirt and hat of Silly Willy, with this done in a scribbled fashion (not totally within the lines). The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover some crease lines/creasing with crease/cracking lines in the front colors (not really bad compared to many of the other comics we are listing), wrinkling/handling wear, two large diagonal lines through the title and near the upper right corner with another smaller diagonal in this corner, a large diagonal line near the bottom right corner, some paper wear to white and creasing/bending along the bound/stapled edge, corner tip wear in both right corners, some wear/bending/creasing/chipping along the top, bottom and right edges, etc. The back cover has a slightly dirty look, with a large diagonal line (this looks to be a pencil line) from the upper right corner, several small tears along the left side and bottom edges, a chip along the top edge and similar wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are clean with a number having corners folded or corner fold lines and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). It looks like the comic was hit/torn along the top edge as you can see many pages with folded and torn paper in the top margin area near the binding (this occurs on less than half the pages, but still quite a few). This copy includes two pages illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Donkey's Shadow, one page telling the limerick There Was an Old Man on a Hill by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Ground Hog on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 15/16 x 10 1/8 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). Classics Illustrated Junior: The Elf Mound Comic Book No. 556 1st Ed
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Elf Mound comic book, No. 556 (Number 556), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside November 1958. Under the title on both the cover and first page it lists the author of the story, Hans Christian Andersen. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 557 Silly Willy (HRN #557). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, Silly Willy with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 557 Silly Willy to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Elf Mound, comic No. 556. This book is not a new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). All the Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior comic books we are listing came out of the same home where they were purchased as new items for their children in the 1950's and 1960's, so these are not recent reprints. Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The Elf Mound comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent writing on the cover of a child's first and last name printed in blue ink pen under the Classics Illustrated Junior box (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been done in pencil and you can see the strong reverse imprint from this as raised lines on the front cover (you see this when looking at the cover in an angle in bright light). The coloring page on the inside back cover has not been done/is clean. The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover lots of handling wrinkling/creasing, some crease lines with crease/cracking lines in the front colors (not really bad compared to many of the other comics we are listing), paper wear to white and creasing along the bound/stapled edge, corner creasing and tip wear in both right corners, wear/bending/creasing/chipping along the bottom and right edges (only a very little of this along the top edge), etc. The back cover has a somewhat overall dirty look, with similar wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are basically clean, some having a little dirt, with some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes three pages illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Shepherd Goes to Sea, followed by one page telling the limerick There Was an Old Man in a Tree by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Lobster on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Classics Illustrated Junior: The 3 Golden Apples Comic Book No. 553
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The 3 Golden Apples comic book, No. 555 (The Three Golden Apples Number 555), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside October 1958. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 568 The Happy Hedgehog (HRN #568). Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The 3 Golden Apples comic is a very nice copy overall, and one of the better condition ones we are listing, but does have a capital letter prominently written in crayon on the front cover top near the title (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover and the coloring page on the inside back cover are clean/have not been done/colored. The comic does have some of the usual age reading use/wear but less of it and not objectionable. In some light it looks like there is a slight darkening band along the top edge of the cover, but in other light this isn't noticeable so there is likely some wear/slight dirtiness here but nothing bad. The cover has a light large diagonal crease near the upper right corner, other light handling wear/creasing/wrinkling, some light creases along the bound/stapled edge with other paper wear to this edge, corner wear/tip bending/chipping to both right corners, wear/slight bending/wrinkling along the top and bottom edges with some wear/bending/chipping along the right side edge, etc. The back cover has a largely clean look, with a 1/4 inch tear followed by diagonal creasing along the top edge, two brown dotted lines, creasing/bending along the top edge with other tiny tears, and other slight evidence of handling wear. The inside pages are clean with all the top right corners showing evidence of curved folding or curling and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes one page illustrating and telling There Was an Old Man with a Nose by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Swan on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 7/8 x 10 5/16 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is the Enchanted Deer comic book, No. 554 (Number 554), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside September 1958. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 555 The 3 Golden Apples (HRN #555). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The 3 Golden Apples with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 555 The 3 Golden Apples to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Enchanted Deer, comic No. 554. This The Enchanted Deer comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent writing on the cover in two places, with a child's name written in crayon near the deer and a capital letter initial written under the Classics Illustrated Junior box in blue pen ink (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover is clean/has not been done (but you can see here the strong reverse imprint from the capital letter written on the cover). The coloring page on the inside back cover has been about 40% colored in pencil and crayon with this done in an erratic scribbled fashion (not within the lines). The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover some crease lines/creasing with crease/cracking lines in the front colors (not really bad compared to many of the other comics we are listing), wrinkling/handling wear, paper wear to white and creasing along the bound/stapled edge, corner creasing lines (large and small) and tip wear in both right corners, wear/bending/creasing/chipping along the top, bottom and right edges, etc. The back cover has a somewhat dirty look, with a large corner diagonal fold near the upper left corner, and similar wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are clean with some corner fold lines and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes one page illustrating and telling There Was a Young Lady Whose Bonnet by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Ostrich on the reverse side. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 554 The Enchanted Deer (HRN #554). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The Enchanted Deer with a description of that comic. This King Thrushbeard comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent writing in crayon of a capital letter initial under the Classics Illustrated Junior box (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been done in blue ink pen and partially colored in crayon. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been about 50%+ colored in crayon and blue ink pen with some of this in a scribbled fashion (not within all the lines). The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover line impressions from the connect the dots picture done in hard pen on the reverse page side (you see this when looking at the cover at an angle in bright light), some prominent crease lines/creasing including crease/cracking lines in the front colors, wrinkling/handling wear, a lot of paper wear to white and creasing along the bound/stapled edge, corner creasing and tip wear in both right corners, a little bit of wear/slight bending/chipping along the top and bottom edges, with some chipping/surface paper wear to white along the right side edge (particularly near the bottom), etc. The back cover has a somewhat dirty look, with similar wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are generally clean (the first comic page has some slight dirt or printing transfer) with some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes one page illustrating and telling There Was an Old Man in a Boat by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Hamster on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 15/16 x 10 1/8 inches in size. Classics Illustrated Jr. The Three Little Dwarfs Comic No. 552 1st Ed
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Three Little Dwarfs comic book, No. 552 (Number 552), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside July 1958. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 553 King Thrushbeard (HRN #553). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, King Thrushbeard with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 553 King Thrushbeard to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Three Little Dwarfs, comic No. 552. This book is not a new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The Three Little Dwarfs comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent writing in blue ink pen of a child's name near the bottom of the front cover along with a separate capital letter initial written in crayon under the Classics Illustrated Junior box (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been done in pencil and partially colored in crayon. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been about 35-40% colored in pencil with some of this in a scribbled fashion (not within all the lines). The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover line impressions from the connect the dots picture done in hard pencil on the reverse page side (you see this when looking at the cover in an angle in bright light), crease lines/creasing and other handling/wrinkling wear including crease/cracking lines in the front colors, paper wear to white and creasing along the bound/stapled edge, corner tip wear in both right corners, wear/slight bending/chipping along the bottom and right side edges (not much along the top edge), etc. The back cover has a slightly dirty look, with similar wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are generally clean (the first comic page has some slight dirt or printing transfer) with some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Woodcutters and the Ax, followed by one page illustrating and telling There Was an Old Man of the West by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Salamander on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 15/16 x 10 3/16 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). Classics Illustrated Jr. The Wishing Table Comic Book No. 547 1st Ed.
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Wishing Table comic book, No. 547 (Number 547), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside February 1958. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 545 The Glass Mountain (HRN #545). On half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The Magic Pitcher which is shown as No. 548 and there is a description of that comic. Given that the publisher ended the back cover list a few comic books prior to this one, yet advertised the next comic in the series, we believe that supports this to be a first edition. This The Wishing Table comic is judged to be an acceptable reading copy overall because it has a lot of wear. On the front cover there is prominent crayon writing in two spots showing a capital letter, another letter that is scribbled out and a number (see images). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been done in pencil but there is also a light brown crayon coloring/shading/scribbling over almost all of the inside cover. The inside back cover coloring page is done similarly, with heavy pencil coloring/scribbling over much of the donkey (10-15% of the picture) then crayon coloring and overall background crayon shading over most of the rest of the picture (in total probably 75-80% of the picture is colored). When you open the inside front cover you can see that there is a 5/8 inch curved tear on the cover at the bottom of the lower staple which creates the look of a hole on the inside of the cover (but there isn't a hole in the cover, the cover is torn here with the edges seen on the cover as folded back to white paper) and a corresponding small 3/8 inch curved tear in the comic book pages from this bound edge that goes through pages 1 through 16 (with the tear being smaller/less noticeable over succeeding pages until it vanishes/ends). There is also a smaller tear with a folded back and chipped section on the cover along the bottom edge of the bound/stapled side (1/4 inch in length/width) and other edge creasing/bends/paper wear all along this side. On the right cover edge there is a 3/4 inch tear and other very small tears/chipping/wear. The front cover exhibits lots of handling/creasing/wrinkling wear with crease/cracking lines in the front colors, right corners fold line/tip chipping/curling, impressed lines, lots of wear along the bottom edge (not much along the top edge), etc. The back cover has a somewhat dirty look, with lots of wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are browned with some having slight folding/creasing and pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). However, part of upper page 24 is missing, having been torn off in a curved fashion along the right side edge including the corner and extending down the page 3 1/2 inches. Fortunately this does not effect reading the story since all words and drawings are present (the tear is largely in the flat background color and margin areas). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Two Frogs, followed by one page illustrating and telling There Was an Old Person of Brigg by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Aardvark on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 3/16 inches in size.
Classics Illustrated Jr. The Golden Fleece Comic Book No. 544 1st Ed.
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Golden Fleece comic book, No. 544 (Number 544), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside November 1957. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 545 The Glass Mountain (HRN #545). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The Glass Mountain with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 545 The Glass Mountain to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Golden Fleece, comic No. 544. This The Golden Fleece comic is a very good copy overall, but does have prominent somewhat light/partial writing in crayon of a child's name among the title with a separate capital letter initial written in blue ink pen near the boy figure (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover is clean/has not been done. However the coloring page on the inside back cover has been 40%+ colored in pencil in an erratic/scribbled fashion (not within all the lines). The comic does have the usual age reading use/wear including on the cover handling wear with a lot of creasing and wrinkling, crease/cracking lines in the front colors, wear/creasing to white/paper wear near and along the bound/stapled edge, corner fold line creasing in the upper right corner, wear/tip chipping to both right corners, wear/slight bending/chipping along the top, bottom and right side edges (this includes several small vertical tears along the top edge, etc. The back cover has a somewhat dirty look, with a small piece of tape stuck to the back, a small vertical tear with chip along top edge, lots of wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, etc. The inside pages are clean with some having some slight folding/creasing and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in publishing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Donkey and the Cricket, followed by one page illustrating and telling The Daddy Long-Legs and the Fly by Edward Lear, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Jaguar on the reverse side. Please note that we have many other comic books listed separately for sale. Classics Illustrated Jr: The House In The Woods Comic Book No. 543
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The House in the Woods comic book, No. 543 (Number 543), with 15 cents price on cover. This comic does not show a date on the bottom inside cover as many of the others do. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 556 The Elf Mound (HRN #556). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). This The House in the Woods comic is a very nice copy overall, and one of the better condition ones we are listing, but does have a light/partial capital letter of a child's first name prominently written in crayon on the front cover under the title (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover has been lightly done in pencil (you don't see any indication of this on the front cover as with some of the other comics where this has been done in heavy pencil). The coloring page on the inside back cover is clean/has not been colored. The comic does have some of the usual age reading use/wear but less of it and not objectionable. You can see in the image that the cover as printed was slightly off with the color not going all the way to the top edge (there is a band of uncolored paper at the top of the front cover). There is handling wear to the cover with some light creasing/wrinkling, creases to white along the bound/stapled edge with other paper wear to this edge, corner fold line creasing in the lower right corner, wear/tip bending/chipping to the both right corners, wear/slight bending along the top and bottom edges, etc. The back cover has a largely clean look, with some evidence of handling particularly with bending/creasing along the top edge, but the back cover is very nice overall. The inside pages are clean with some having folding in the lower right corner and some pin holes/small holes in some pages (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Treasure in the Vineyard, followed by one page illustrating and telling the nursery rhyme The Broom, The Shovel, The Poker and the Tongs, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Skunk on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 7/8 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Classics Illustrated Junior: The Tinder-box Comic Book No. 540
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Tinder-Box comic book, No. 540 (Number 540), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside July 1957. This is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 559 The Japanese Lantern (HRN #559). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing. Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The Tinder-Box comic is a good copy overall, but does have a lot of writing on the cover all in the same general location. Basically around the bottom of the Classics Illustrated box a child's full name was written in blue pen ink, next to which some large capital letters were written in crayon with these then crossed out in crayon and multiple lines of blue ink (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover and the coloring page on the inside back cover are clean, they have not been done or colored. We note that the front cover seems to fall slightly short of covering the inside pages along the right edge as you can see a thin vertical area (under 1/16 inch in width) of the inner pages when looking at the cover. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover a strong diagonal fold line near the bottom right corner, general wrinkling/creasing/handling, a 3/8 inch tear from the right side edge near the title, fold lines/tip chipping/wear in both right corners, wear/creasing/paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge, wrinkling/chipping/paper wear along the top and bottom edges, impressed lines, scuffing wear and crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover is overall slightly dirty with similar creasing, wrinkling, handling wear, etc. The inside pages are clean but browned, with some having pin holes and small holes (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing), corner tip bending, a bit of scuffing/dirt, etc. This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Lioness and her Family, followed by a page illustrating and telling the Hickety, Pickety nursery rhyme, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Kinkajou (an animal that belongs to the same family as the raccoon and the Panda and lives in South America) on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 1/8 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Classics Illustrated Jr. The Enchanted Fish Comic Book No. 539 1st Ed
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Enchanted Fish comic book, No. 539 (Number 539), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside June 1957. We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 540 The Tinder-Box (HRN #540). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The Tinder-Box with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 540 The Tinder-Box to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Enchanted Fish, comic No. 539. This The Enchanted Fish comic is a good copy overall, but does have a child's first name written prominently on the cover in crayon with the first letter initial also written nearby in blue ink pen (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been completed in pencil. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been partially colored in pencil in a scribbling fashion (not always within the lines) mainly on the lady and dog, with a line drawing of the sun added to the picture and another long scribbled/curvy line/writing (probably about 40%+ of the picture has been colored). The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover the impressions from the connect the dots picture done on the reverse side, general wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, bending/chipping wear/small tears along the top, bottom and right side edges, a lot of wear/paper wear/paper tearing along the left bound/stapled edge, a 5/8 inch long break along the bound side starting at the bottom edge, several small diagonal corner creases in the upper right corner, corner tip wear/chipping on both right corners, scuffing wear and crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover is overall somewhat dirty with similar creasing, wrinkling, handling wear, etc. You can see some impressions on the back cover from the pencil coloring on the inside back cover. The inside pages are clean but browned, with many having pin holes and small holes in the paper (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Four Oxen and the Lion, followed by a page illustrating and telling The Queen of Hearts nursery rhyme, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Armadillo on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). Classics Illustrated Junior: The Three Fairies Comic Book No. 537 B
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Three Fairies comic book, No. 537 (Number 537), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside April 1957. This is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 559 The Japanese Lantern (HRN #559). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Three Fairies comic and are listing each separately as A and B . From the differences in the HRN numbers, copy A is older than copy B (HRN 538 vs. HRN 559). All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing. Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This The Three Fairies comic is a good copy overall (we would judge copy A to be in better condition), but does have writing on the cover in two separate spots in blue pen ink. Near the bottom front cover appears a child's full name and below the comic title in the center this name was written prominently again but then lined out with several horizontal lines (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover has been completed in pen with some lighter pen line coloring. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been partially colored in crayon on the lady's clothing and arms with additional coloring on the water (probably about 15-20% of the picture has been colored at most). The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover a vertical slightly slanted fold line going down the full cover near the right side, the impressions from the connect the dots picture done on the reverse side, general wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, scuffing/paper wear to white/wrinkling/chipping along the top edge, line cracking wear/other paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge, several diagonal corner creases in the upper right corner, corner tip wear/chipping on both right corners, scuffing wear and crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover is overall slightly dirty with lines and impressed raised lines, and similar creasing, wrinkling, handling wear, etc. The inside pages are clean but browned, with the last comic page having two vertical tears along the bottom edge (1/2 inch and 1 inch in length). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Ant and the Dove, followed by a page illustrating and telling the Rub-A-Dub-Dub nursery rhyme, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Flamingo on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 6 7/8 x 10 1/16 inches in size. The Three Fairies Comic Book No. 537 A 1st Ed
We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 538 Silly Hans (HRN #538). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, Silly Hans with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 538 Silly Hans to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Three Fairies, comic No. 537. This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Three Fairies comic and are listing each separately as A and B . This The Three Fairies comic is a very good/good copy overall, but does have a child's first name written prominently on the cover in crayon with the first letter initial also written nearby in blue ink pen (see image). The connect the dots picture on half of the inside front cover has been completed in pencil (and you can see the strong reverse imprint from the first letter initial written hard on the reverse/front cover side). The coloring page on the inside back cover has been partially colored in crayon on the lady's clothing with a bit on her face and the water (probably about 10-15% of the picture has been colored at most). The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover the impressions from the connect the dots picture done on the reverse side, impressions from other writing/dots/lines (a piece of paper must have been placed on top of this comic and a good bit of writing was done on that paper, you only see this when you look at an angle in bright light but it is there), general wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, bending/chipping wear along the top, bottom and right side edges, wear/paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge, several diagonal corner creases in the upper right corner, corner tip wear/chipping on both right corners, etc. The back cover is overall slightly dirty with several round stain spots, and similar creasing, wrinkling, handling wear, etc. You can see pink on the back cover which appears to be crayon bleed from the coloring done on the inside back cover. The inside pages are clean but browned, with many having pin holes and small holes in the paper (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Ant and the Dove, followed by a page illustrating and telling the Rub-A-Dub-Dub nursery rhyme, with an illustrated page The Animal World, The Flamingo on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Classics Illustrated Junior: The Chimney Sweep Comic Book No. 536
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Chimney Sweep comic book, No. 536 (Number 536), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside March 1957. On the cover under the title it lists the author of the story, Hans Christian Andersen. This is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 563 The Wishing Well (HRN #563). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). This The Chimney Sweep comic is in very good condition overall, but does have a child's first name written prominently on the cover in crayon with the first letter initial also written nearby in blue ink pen (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover and the coloring page on the inside back cover are clean, that is they have not been done or colored at all. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover a large vertical crease line in the middle with a second vertical/slightly slanted crease line near the left bound/stapled edge, a diagonal crease in the Classics Illustrated box, onpage wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, bending and wrinkling along the top and bottom edges, large and small diagonal fold lines near the bottom right corner, corner tip chipping in the upper and lower right corners, paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge, crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover appears a lot cleaner looking than many of the other comics, but still has similar expected use/handling wear (wrinkling, creasing, etc.). The inside pages are generally clean but browned (a few pages seem a bit dirty perhaps from ink transfer). This copy includes two pages illustrating and telling Aesop's Fables The Fisherman and the Little Fish, followed by a page illustrating and telling the nursery rhyme Pat-A-Cake, with The Animal World, The Beaver on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 3/16 inches in size. Classics Illustrated Junior: The Magic Fountain Comic Book No. 533
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is the The Magic Fountain comic book, No. 533 (Number 533), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside December 1956. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 562 The Enchanted Pony (HRN #562). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). The Magic Fountain comic is an acceptable reading copy (we say this largely because part of one page has been cut out as will be detailed below), but does have a child's first name written prominently in crayon on the front cover with the letter initial of this name also written nearby in blue ink pen (see image). The inside front cover connect the dots picture has been done in pencil with the animal figure also colored in in pencil and a different child's name and last name initial written above this in cursive in pencil. However, the inside back cover coloring picture is clean/has not been done or colored. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear. On the front cover in particular there is a vertical band along the right side edge about 1/2 inch in width that is slightly discolored/lighter than the other coloring on the cover. This does not appear to be water damage as there is no indication of damage on the reverse side/inside front cover, so we don't know why this is there. Otherwise the front cover has usual handling wear including wrinkling, creasing, impressed lines (as if somewhat put another paper on top of the comic and did something on that paper), a vertical crease line, wear along the top and bottom edges including tiny tears/chipping/rubbed wear to white/etc., wear/paper wear along the bound/stapled edge, crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover has an aged/slightly dirty look with similar handling, wrinkling, etc. wear. Also on the back cover there are four pencil check marks next to four of the comic titles. The inside pages are browned, several have some folding at the top or bottom right corners, and a number have some small tears/chips -- an about 3/4 inch vertical tear from the bottom edge in the middle bottom of the first comic page and on page 23 (with this page also having a second smaller tear), an about 1/4 inch similar tear in the same spot on page 7, a tiny triangular chip along the bottom edge with a little dark spot/staining on page 9, and a tiny triangular chip along the right side edge near the bottom on page 15. However, the most important interior issue is that someone cut into the final page of the story, page 25, cuting out what we are guessing was part of the drawing showing the prince and princess getting married. You can read the last page fine (there's no cutting in the words here), but the figures of the prince and princess have been cut out. This also affects the reverse side which is the first page of a 5 page illustrated comic of The Straw, The Coal and The Bean, and here the cutting has taken out some of the words as well as illustration. After this story, this copy includes a one page illustration and telling of the nursery rhyme Where, O Where, with the reverse side illustrating The Animal World, The Squirrel. This collectible comic book measures about 6 15/16 x 10 3/16 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Please note that we have many other comic books listed separately for sale. Classics Illustrated Jr: The Dancing Princesses Comic Book No. 532 B
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Dancing Princesses comic book, No. 532 (Number 532), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside November 1956. This is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 567 The Bearskin Soldier (HRN #567). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Dancing Princesses comic and are listing each separately as A and B . From the differences in the HRN numbers, copy A is older than copy B (HRN 533 vs. HRN 567). This The Dancing Princesses comic is in very good condition overall (we judge copy B to be in much better condition than copy A ), but does have a child's first name written prominently on the cover in crayon (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover and the coloring page on the inside back cover are clean, that is they have not been done or colored at all. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear including on the front cover a large diagonal crease line going through the boy's/princes' head and raised arm, a lighter vertical crease line basically going down the middle of the cover, other wrinkling/creasing/handling wear, a diagonal fold line near the lower right corner plus corner tip wear/bending wear here and in the upper right corner, wear/tiny bending/chipping along the top, bottom and right side edges, paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge, etc. The back cover appears a lot cleaner looking than many of the other comics, but still has similar expected slight use/handling wear (wrinkling, creasing, etc.). The inside pages are clean but browned, with one page seen to have some dark staining. This copy includes a page after the story illustrating and telling the Little Jack Horner rhyme, with an illustrated page telling The Animal World, The Porcupine on the reverse side. Please note that we have many other comic books listed separately for sale. Classics Illustrated Jr: The Dancing Princesses Comic No. 532a 1st Ed
We think this is a first edition of this comic. The listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with the next comic in this series, No. 533 The Magic Fountain (HRN #533). But on half of the inside front cover there is an ad announcing, Coming Next Month, The Magic Fountain with a description of that comic. So we believe that the publisher added comic No. 533 The Magic Fountain to the list on the back cover even though this was a first edition of The Dancing Princesses, comic No. 532. This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Dancing Princesses comic and are listing each separately as A and B . This The Dancing Princesses comic is an acceptable reading copy overall, but does have a child's first name written prominently on the cover in crayon with the first letter initial also written nearby in blue ink pen (see image). The connect the dots picture on the inside front cover has been completed in pencil. The coloring page on the inside back cover has been colored a bit on the lady's skirt in blue ink pen (probably about 10% of the picture has been colored at most). The comic does have lots of usual age reading use/wear. We particularly note that the front cover has a somewhat dirty appearance with dirt/spotting particularly along the pink background at the right side edge and other dirt/slightly dark lines on the princess' skirt and elsewhere on the cover. The cover also has creasing/handling/wrinkling lines, some wear along the bound/stapled edge, some wear/tip curling/tip folding/chipping on the two right corners, wear/slight chipping/slight bending along the upper, lower and right side edges, crease/cracking lines in the front colors, etc. The back cover seems generally dirty, with similar creasing, wrinkling, lots of handling wear, etc. While the inside pages are mostly clean but browned, there is a little spotting/staining in the margin area of the first comic page with a small right side edge paper tear on this and another page, with some pages having pin holes in the paper (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing). This copy includes a page after the story illustrating and telling the Little Jack Horner rhyme, with an illustrated page telling The Animal World, The Porcupine on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). Classics Illustrated Junior: The Penny Prince Comic Book No. 528 B
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is the The Penny Prince comic book, No. 528 (Number 528), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside July 1956. On the first page bottom it states that this comic is based on The Swineherd by Hans Christian Andersen. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 557 Silly Willy (HRN #557). For other age perspective, on the inside back cover there is a listing of comics available in the Classics Illustrated series which ends with No. 148 The Buccaneer. This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Penny Prince comic and are listing each separately as A and B . Copy B must be older than copy A given the earlier HRN number on the back cover (557 vs. 568). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. The Penny Prince comic is in good condition overall, but does have a child's first and last name written prominently in blue pen ink on the front cover. This copy of The Penny Prince does not have a connect the dots or coloring page as printed (this also supports copy B being older than copy A ). The comic does have usual age reading use/wear on the cover via a large diagonal crease near the top of the cover with the line going through The in the title, onpage creasing/handling/wrinkling wear, a small vertical tear along the top edge with other use wear/chipping on this edge and along the bottom and right side edges, some wear along the left side bound/stapled edge (but not bad), corner tip bending/chipping/wear on both right corners, etc. The back cover looks slightly dirty with two small tears along the top edge, other general folding/bending wear/chipping along all three non-bound edges, and general wrinkling, creasing, etc. The inside pages are browned but clean. This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating the Aesop's Fables The Two Goats, followed by an illustrated page telling the nursery rhyme Three Little Kittens, which on its reverse side has an illustrated page, The Animal World The Rabbit. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 3/16 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). 568 The Happy Hedgehog (HRN #568). This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Please note that we have two copies of this The Penny Prince comic and are listing each separately as A and B . All the Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior comic books we are listing came out of the same home where they were purchased as new items for their children in the 1950's and 1960's, so these are not recent reprints. The Penny Prince comic is in very nice condition overall, but does have a child's first name written prominently in crayon on the front cover with the letter initial of this name also written nearby in blue ink pen. The inside front cover connect the dots picture and the inside back cover coloring picture are clean/have not been done or colored. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear but a lot less than many of the other comics we are listing. There is handling wear but no large visible creasing or creases through the front cover colors. You can see at an angle in bright light evidence of handling via circular creases, lines, marks, etc. There is a small diagonal fold near the lower right corner and corner tip bending/wear to both right corners. There is some edge wear (bending/wrinkling) to the top, bottom and right side edges but nothing bad. There is visible paper wear along the left bound/stapled edge as expected. But this is a nice looking front cover overall. The back cover has an aged/slightly dirty look with some tiny darkening spots along the left edge and a tiny tear along the bottom edge, with other general wear/chipping along all three non-bound edges. The inside pages are browned but clean, with most having a slight diagonal crease along the bottom right, and a number of pages towards the back having pin holes and small holes in the paper (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing). This copy includes two pages after the story illustrating the Aesop's Fables The Two Goats, followed by an illustrated page telling the nursery rhyme Three Little Kittens, which on its reverse side has an illustrated page, The Animal World The Rabbit. This collectible comic book measures about 6 7/8 x 10 5/16 inches in size. All were read and handled by children and thus show expected handling wear. Classics Illustrated Junior: The Sleeping Beauty Comic Book No. 505
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is The Sleeping Beauty comic book, No. 505 (Number 505), which was the fifth title in the series (the first title was numbered 501), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside February 1954. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 548 The Magic Pitcher (HRN #548). The inside front cover has a subscription ad for the comic series showing the Pied Piper cover art. The inside back cover has an ad for Gilberton's Classics Illustrated series, which lists to No. 142 Abraham Lincoln. This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). This Sleeping Beauty comic is a nice copy overall, but does have a child's first name prominently written in crayon on the front cover with the first initial/letter also written in a second location in pencil. On the back cover the child's first name was written onto the order block in pencil, with a lot of check marks and other scribbling among the comic title list (see both images). The comic does have usual age reading use/wear with cover wrinkling/creasing/handling/bending wear, a small curved rip to white with other bending/folding lines along the bottom edge (with this same rip on the bottom of the first comic page and here having a piece that is almost ripped off), wrinkling/tiny chipping along the top and bottom cover edges overall, several small diagonal corner lines in the lower right corner, bending/chipping to the upper right corner, crease/cracking lines in the front colors, wear along the left bound/stapled edge with crack lines/etc. The back cover seems generally slightly dirty, with similar folding, creasing, wrinkling, etc. The inside pages are otherwise clean. This copy includes a page after the story illustrating and telling the Simple Simon rhyme, with an illustrated page about camels on the reverse side. There is no connect the dots or coloring page in this comic as printed. There is some pencil writing of three numbers on the inside back cover page.
Classics Illustrated Junior: Cinderella Comic Book No. 503
Vintage Classics Illustrated Junior comic book published by Famous Authors, Ltd., which was a division of Gilberton Company, Inc. or Gilberton Publications. This is the Cinderella comic book, No. 503 (Number 503), which was the third title in the series (the first title was numbered 501), with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside December 1953. We do not know if this is a first edition of this comic book. All the other books in the Classics Illustrated Junior series we are listing have a listing on their back cover showing the other comic books available in this series, but this comic does not. On its back cover is an ad for a recording of these fairy tales which lists some of the titles with pictures of the covers but not Cinderella (see second image). The inside front cover has a subscription ad for the comic series showing the Pinocchio cover art (Pinocchio was number 513 in the series). The inside back cover has an ad for Gilberton's Classics Illustrated series, which lists to No. 147 Ben Hur. Hopefully some of this information will help you date this Cinderella comic book. This book is not the new reprint (there is no UPC block on this book). Many have a child's name or initial noticeably written on the front cover in ink or crayon (and a few have more writing on the cover). For many the interior connect the dots illustration has been done or the interior coloring page has been colored. This Cinderella is a very nice copy overall, but does have a child's first and last name prominently written in ink on the front cover, with the back cover having some notations, check marks and writing in blue ink. There is no connect the dots or coloring page in this comic as printed. The comic does have usual age reading use/wear with cover wrinkling/creasing/handling/bending wear, a large diagonal fold line on the lower portion, a series of indented lines (as if someone wrote on another piece of paper when it was sitting on top of this comic, no stains but the lines are visible when held at an angle in bright light), corner folding lines and curling in the lower right corner, corner tip chipping in the upper right corner, chipping and wrinkling along the bottom front cover edge, etc. The back cover seems generally slightly dirty, with similar folding, creasing, wrinkling, etc. The inside pages are clean, a few having a pin hole (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing) or a corner tip folded. This copy includes a page after the story illustrating and telling the Jack and Jill rhyme, with an illustrated page about Giant Pandas on the reverse side. This collectible comic book measures about 7 x 10 3/8 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Classics Illustrated: The Queen's Necklace Comic Book No. 165
Vintage Classics Illustrated comic book by Gilberton Company, Inc. (Gilberton Publications). This is The Queen's Necklace comic book, No. 165 (Number 165) in the series with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside January 1962. We believe this one to be a first edition or first issue of this comic since the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 164 The Cossack Chief (HRN #164). Further, on the inside front cover is a large ad announcing the next book coming in the series, Tigers and Traitors, comic No. 166. All the Classics Illustrated and Classics Illustrated Junior comic books we are listing came out of the same home where they were purchased as new items for their children in the 1960's, so these are not recent reprints. The Classics Illustrated comic books are in good/very good or better condition but are definitely not mint, showing varying levels of age and wear which will be detailed. All were read and handled by children and thus show expected handling wear. All have interior pages which are browned at the edges, looking overall with an aged paper look, that is, the interior pages are not white as they would have been originally. All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing. The Queen's Necklace comic states the author's name on the cover as Alexandre Dumas. This is a very nice copy overall. It does have usual age reading use/wear. On the cover there are many vertical line creases (we didn't see these until we looked at an angle in bright light but they are definitely there), and it looks like a child has written the capital first letter of his/her name in the background space under the Classics Illustrated box (this is done in a light gray which somewhat fades into the background, but you can see it). The comic cover as printed shows some horizontal white space at the top above the colored art, with bending/wrinkling along the top edge. There is slight wear around the staples, a fold line/crease near the bottom right corner and other general handling wear, indentations, creases, etc. The back cover appears slightly dirty with some scuffing, folding/wrinkling along the top edge and other general handling/age wear. The inside pages are clean with some dark brown discoloration at the very top of the inside back cover. On some interior pages along the top edge there is some as printed black lines or thin black rectangles. This copy includes the page detailing Alexandre Dumas, followed by two one page stories, Who Knows? and The Bride Comes to Yellow Sky , after which is another 5 page full color comic, Men of Action Caupolican . This collectible comic book measures about 6 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. Classics Illustrated: Lives Of The Hunted Comic Book No. 157
Vintage Classics Illustrated comic book by Gilberton Company, Inc. (Gilberton Publications). This is Lives of the Hunted comic book, No. 157 (Number 157) in the series with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside February 1964. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 167 Faust (HRN #167). The Lives of the Hunted comic states the author's name on the cover as Ernest Thompson Seton. This is an acceptable reading copy overall but it does show lots of wear/age. On the front cover there is a piece missing in the lower left corner with other smaller chipping/pieces missing along the vertical bound/stapled edge above it. In the lower right corner you can see in the image that the corner has been chipped off, with corner chipping also in this same place on the interior pages (smaller, but there). The top edge of the front cover has been bent back slightly, with chipping and small pieces missing and top right corner tip chipping. The front cover has other tearing at the top left corner, horizontal creasing, general creasing, wrinkling, some slight scuffing, indentation marks, browning and dirt, etc. On the back cover there is chipping/pieces missing along the bottom edge and bound right corner, wrinkling/bending, tears/chipping in the staple areas (these are most noticeable when you open the book looking at the inside back cover), dirt/browning, and other general use/handling wear. On the inside pages there are pin holes in a number of pages near the bottom (we believe this is from how the paper was made/handled in printing), some tiny bottom edge tears, and one page has a tear with the paper edges folded up, etc. This copy includes the page detailing Ernest Thompson Seton and two other one page stories, The Secret of the Cave and Escape to Freedom . Classics Illustrated: The White Company Comic Book No. 102
Vintage Classics Illustrated comic book by Gilberton Company, Inc. (Gilberton Publications). This is The White Company comic book, No. 102 (Number 102) in the series with 15 cents price on cover, dated on the inside December 1952. It is not a first edition as the listing on the back cover of other comic books available in the series ends with No. 165 The Queen's Necklace (HRN #165). The White Company comic states the author's name on the cover as A. Conan Doyle. This is a nice copy overall. It does have usual age reading use/wear although the front cover is nicer than many (but the back cover has a good bit of wear). There still is some front cover wrinkling/bending wear, some cover folding and fold lines at the lower right corner, corner tip chipping upper and lower right corners, along the top and bottom front cover edges there is some chipping/bending with a small tear to paper scuffing along the bottom edge, bend creasing and wear along the stapled bound edge front cover, and other expected handling wear, indentations, creases, etc. The back cover shows a lot of paper wear/paper scuffing/tearing along the top edge as well as in many other spots. To us it looks as if the back cover once got stuck to something else and then was pulled off creating a lot of top surface paper wear (but there is no indication of water damage). The back cover also has other spotting, tiny edge tears, a horizontal fold across the cover near the bottom, general wear, etc. The inside pages are clean with some bending/curling at the top towards the end of the book and on the back cover. This copy includes a page about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a two page story titled How Much Land Does a Man Need? and one page Great Lives about Nathan Hale. This collectible comic book measures about 6 11/16 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used). As such, we will only sell this comic to adult collectors, it should be handled with care, and it should not be given to/handled by children due to concerns with lead exposure. All have an old comic book smell, not bad, but there if you go sniffing. The Moonstone comic states the author's name on the cover as William Wilkie Collins. This is a very nice copy overall. It does have usual age reading use/wear with some cover wrinkling/bending wear, some scuffing and dirt on the cover, some cover folding and fold lines at the lower right corner, corner tip chipping upper and lower right corners, along the top and bottom front cover edges there are a few tiny tears/bends/chipping/wrinkling, bend creasing and wear along the stapled bound edge front cover, and other expected handling wear, indentations, creases, etc. The back cover also shows general/similar wear, a 5/8 inch tear near the lower left corner, multiple scuffed circle marks, wear along the top edge and top right corner, and the former owner has circled the numbers of five other comic books in pen or pencil. The inside pages are clean. This copy includes the page detailing William Wilkie Collins and the page with a Dog Heroes story. This collectible comic book measures about 6 7/8 x 10 1/4 inches in size. Given that this is an old or vintage comic book, we do not know what kind of ink was used in the printing (and particularly, whether any lead based inks were used).
