A Time Remembered

Manufacturer: Corning Glass Company/Made in USA
These 6 vintage Christmas Ornaments are marked: Made in US of A (The mark used by Corning Glass Company in new York State).
Corning had considered the possibility of producing ornaments as early as 1933. Before the war, Corning Glass Works moved cautiously for two reasons. Corning specialized in made-to-order precision jobs such as the Mt. Palomar telescope, bulbs for electric lights, and complex engineering equipment.
Max Eckardt, an importer of German ornaments since 1907 foresaw the events of Germany dictating an end to his business as it did during World War I. He knew of Corning's ribbon glass blowing machine and reasoned that if Corning could make a light bulb, it should be able to produce a glass ornament as well.
Thus he began negotiations with Corning and in the late summer of 1939 planning started in earnest. A dozen of the first designs were chosen, these were called molded fancies and by 1940, 120,000,000 colored glass balls and ornaments were sold.
The lot consists of 4 small spheres;
2-blue with pink, yellow and white stripes that measure 2 1/4 inches tall,
2-green with white, pink and yellow stripes that measures 2 1/4 inches tall,
1-larger blue sphere with white flowers and yellow stripes that measures 2 3/4 inches tall and
1-light green with a large white flower that measures 4 inches tall.
In very good condition they do show some spots, discoloration and scratches which I have shown in my pictures.
