    Ethiopian Wooden Engraved Staff 20th Century A well handled beautiful staff from Ethiopia with a rich brown patina. Probably used as an orator's stick. The staff has a human face carved at the top and it is carved into a cone at the bottom. In Africa, staffs have long had numerous and varied uses, ranging from the purely utilitarian function as walking-sticks to more exalted roles pertaining to spiritual, political or prestige matters. In addition, they sometimes communicate specific messages through their iconography, thus serving as documents whose sculpted forms can be understood as narratives. The degree of specialization in the use of staffs by any group generally corresponds directly to the complexity of a staff's decoration. - Africa The Art of A Continent Size: Approx. 30½ inches long Condition: Good used condition.     There were 6 Mats originally purchased in 1969 but only 2 are left. They were given as a gift to my mother but who knows what happened to the other 4.     Ghana - Akubaba/Akua ba Doll Ashanti women carry Akuaba dolls in a cloth wrapped around their back as a charm to ensure the birth of healthy, attractive children. They are also carried by small girls tucked into the back at their waist clothes. Ashantis admire a high, round forehead. The rings on the neck represent rolls of fat. Condition: Very Good, there is a slight indentation on one eye rim, which I believe is part of the original wood. This mask has tribal scarification of the forehead and cheeks. I have had her for 30 years and she was aged when I acquired her from a very respected Dealer in Ethnographic Arts. Condition: Very Good.
