Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Soft toys are among the oldest playthings known to man: for instance, a rag doll was found in the tomb of an Ancient Egyptian child. Such finds are rare, however, and the majority of soft toys to be seen today were commercially produced in the last hundred years. This book outlines the development of the soft-toy industry from its origins in late nineteenth-century Germany to its heyday in Britain in the 1920s and 1930s when the English firms of Dean's Rag Book Company, Chad Valley and Merrythought dominated the industry. Many different types of manufactured soft toy are described and illustrated, from the cheap printed cut-out toy to the wide range of plush stuffed animals and the exquisitely made felt and velveteen mascot dolls of Lenci and Norah Wellings. Special sections are devoted to the history of the teddy bear, the golliwog and to soft toys based on popular cartoon characters.

A detailed main index enables the user to look up virtually any doll by name, and it is followed by a second index that helps identify dolls by numbers incised into the molds from which they were created. Foulke didn't stop there; she also included a glossary of terms to help beginners and non-doll specialists with trade terminology, such as paperweight eyes, gusset joint or mignonnette. With nearly 40 years of experience in the doll business, Foulke relishes the opportunity to share her knowledge and does so with an extensive section on how to assess quality, condition, clothing and originality. It is followed by a detailed narrative packed with tips on buying and selling dolls, including at auction. Throughout, these tutorials are written in a clear and conversational style with no filler. Special thanks to former Mattel designer -- Carol Spencer -- who once again came to our rescue and allowed us to use her priceless personal collection of Mattel catalogs for reprinting. Carol is always supportive in our pursuit to further enlighten Barbie doll collectors. A. Glenn Mandeville, our Price Guide Editor and the most pre-eminent Barbie scholar and authority, shot the cover and title pages for this edition. We think that you will agree that Glenn's love for our favorite fashion model doll comes through loud and clear in his Fabulous photos. Take a look at the costume sections in the 1966 and 1967 Mattel catalogs. You'll notice that except for an occasional Midge (or Twist 'N Turn in 1967), most of the models are red lipped American Girls with silky hair or side part American Girls with red lips. No wonder these gorgeous dolls have become highly sought after by collectors around the world. They make every costume look simply gorgeous, darling! Perhaps these catalogs will influence you to start to collect something you previously overlooked like the darling Tutti and Todd dolls, or Ken's fashions. Your certain to find the brightly colored mod-influenced '67 and '68 fashions enticing. Challenge yourself. Look for variations, or materials of costumes that were never produced. Heartfelt thanks to veteran Mattel designer. Carol Spencer who let us use her personal collection of Mattel catalogs for reprinting. We scrambled for years to purchase all of the old Mattel catalogs. Carol came to our rescue so that we could share all of this wonderful reference information with you. Barry Sturgill, our primo photographer, shot the cover and title pages for this edition. We are sure that you'll agree his lovely photos make this issue spectacular! You'll notice that the early years of Barbie, particularly 1959, 1960 and 1961 generated a lot less catalog space. As the phenomenon of the Barbie doll grew, the line flourished, more companies were licensed and consequently, more space was devoted to Barbie in both the Mattel catalogs and in the major retail Christmas catalogs from 1963-1965. Novice or seasoned collectors will enjoy seeing the developments in the line, the type and variety of licensed products and the variations! HINT! Look for the blonde Fashion Queen and the red hot rod! Many of you will see at least a few things that you never saw before. We strive to be your collecting connection. Sharing knowledge, showcasing you--the collector, your clubs and your talents makes publishing Barbie Bazaar a delight. Thank you. Sincerely, Karen Caviale & Marlene Mura, Publishers
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Most of us have heard the story of Barbie's creative inspiration. Ruth Handler, Barbie's mom and one of the co-founders of Mattel Inc., watched daughter Barbara dress her grown-up paper dolls over and over again until they were in tatters. Ruth assessed the current toy market and envisioned a new doll a three dimensional fashion model that little girls could dress and put in a variety of play situations. In 1957, Mattel explored the feasibility of establishing production facilities in the Orient to save money in manufacturing this new doll and other products. This is where our story begins. A collaborative effort was required by several groups in Japan to make the first molds for the Barbie doll. Kokusai Boeki Kaisha Ltd. coordinated the entire Barbie doll project. Charlotte Johnson, an American fashion designer, was brought to Tokyo to create Barbie doll's first wardrobe -- twenty-one costumes. Kokusai Boeki hired a local seamstress to assist her. Prototype dolls, and sample costumes had to be approved in the States and sent back to Japan for manufacturing. Some rejects appear in the Barbie collecting world as a special class. Mass production of Barbie products began in Japan in 1959 and continued through 1972. Barbie dolls and costumes were first available for Japan's domestic market in 1962. The majority of Barbie products sold in Japan were the same as the ones sold in the States. Interestingly, costumes have surfaced in Japan that were variations of those sold in the U.S., made from the same pattern but with different fabrics. Dolls like side part bendable leg Barbie with Twist `N Turn era vinyl, side part bubble cuts with this same pink skin were sold in Japan, but not in America. How did this happen? For a number of reasons differences in production schedules, a lack of inspecting requirements, and a waste not, want not attitude in using up bolts of fabric. Now, in Keiko Kimura Shibano's Barbie In Japan, you can vicariously enjoy these rare Japanese dolls and fashions.

The Queen's Dolls' House (The Royal Dollhouse In England's Windsor Castle Circa 1924) By: Lucinda Lambton
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. From simple one-room cottages to multilevel castles, dollhouses have long been treasured by children and adults alike. In an ever-expanding array of sizes and styles, they may be closely modeled on reality or wildly whimsical. Few, however, approach the splendor of the royal dollhouse on display at Windsor Castle. With running water, electricity, two working elevators, and many other delights, there can be no question that this is a dollhouse fit for a queen. This lavishly illustrated volume offers a detailed history of the creation, decoration, and furnishing of this extraordinary dollhouse. Commissioned in the 1920s for Queen Mary and designed by renowned architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, the house is a perfect scale replica of an Edwardian residence, complete in every detail. Its library boasts original works by the likes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Thomas Hardy, and Edith Wharton. Its wine cellar is replete with tiny bottles containing thimblefuls of real vintage wine. And, naturally, its tiny residents eschew pink convertibles in favor of the fleet of elegant Rolls Royce limousines housed in the miniature garage. These and hundreds of other charming features are lovingly detailed in color, with extensive use of material from the royal archives, detailing for the first time the contributions of the artists, craftspeople, and donors involved in its creation. An imaginative tour of this smallest and grandest of aristocratic residences, which receives thousands of full-sized visitors each year, The Queen's Dolls' House is full of surprises that will captivate toy collectors, miniaturists, and fans of the royal family alike.
