Great Expectations Antiques

Circa: 1930-50's
Condition: Good++
Manufacturer: E.C. STEARNS & CO. SYRACUSE N.Y.
This is a nice clean adjustable swival type handle heavy duty scraper marked "E.C. STEARNS & CO. SYRACUSE N.Y." on the rear casting. Much like the Starrett scraper on the handle design, simple turn the handle counterclockwise to loosen the swivel ball in the main casting, move it to where you want it, then tighten it in place. The handle appears to be rosewood, but most likely is maple stained to appear as rosewood, and has a good brass ferrule with no cracks, and some wear noted on the finish. The two piece iron casting press together to hold the steel blade in place, the blade in good condition, can be used one all four sides and holds in place very well due to the curvature of the holding plates. This design is questionablely better than the Starrett model. I have seen very few of these over the years, and I have to say that I do like this design! The cutter blade is 3" wide, and the tool overall length is 8", it's a bit heavy at 1.5 pounds. All in very good working order, a rare find!
