Blown Art Glass Bowl/ashtray Murano Style Kidney Shape
Unfortunately, during the artesan blowing process, this wonderful 6 x 4 3/4 inch art glass ashtray/bowl suffered a meltdown of some of the slag causing a divot or dimple to form in the glass exterior, beneath the flat, wide rim. This 1 inch area is not a chip - it is sunken and smooth to the touch. There are also some bubbles seen in the glass and a small flake under the rim. Although unmarked, this blown vessel has a shape and coloring similar to the Murano Art Glass. Marvelous green and amber colors encased in clear glass make this kidney shaped ashtray/bowl appealing and worthy of display.

Mason's Old Fashioned Amber Root Beer Bottle 1950's
Mason & Mason of Chicago, Illinois produced this 10 fl oz Old Fashioned Root Beer brown/amber bottle back in the 1950's time frame. The graphics, depicting a boy and a barrel, are still bright and vivid. There is some minor scuffing and nicks around the glass, most likely from its re-use. In those by-gone days, there was a deposit on glass bottles so that the manufacturer could get them back. Thatcher Mfg. Company of Elmira New York (and other locations across the United States) produced the bottle, T (resembling an anchor) logo, with M and C underneath the horizontal stroke of the T can be found under the base. The number, 2572 shows above the Thatcher trademark, with an E to the left and 52 (which we believe is the year date) to the right. In addition, the mark reads, 10 fl oz along with the #2. Also, on the bottom right hand side, just above the ribbed design, are the words Bottled Under Authority, Mason & Mason Chicago, Illinois. This is faint, but can still be seen. This very good condition 60+ year old bottle would make a fine addition to a barware display.

Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Murano owes its worldwide fame to blown glass. The works created by the skilful hands of the island's master glassblowers have been exported East and West for centuries now, providing some of the most exquisite decorations for royal palaces and princely homes, and arousing the wonder and delight of travelers, poets and writers throughout the ages. Attilia Dorigato, Director of the Murano Glass Museum, here traces all the keys stages in the development of this age-old craft. Running from the Middle Ages to the heart of the contemporary world, her study focuses with particular attention on the master glassmakers of the late part of the twentieth century. This up-to-date survey draws on an extraordinary range of photographs, some of them being published for the first time, and constitutes a fundamental work for anyone who wishes to understand the history of glass. Special illustrated appendices are included to reveal the techniques and secrets of this fascinating craft; what tools the master glassblowers use; what goes into making specific glass pastes (with such exotic names as lattimo, calcedonio and avventurina); what is involved in the various procedures for working and finishing glass that have been invented and developed in Murano itself. The volume is completed with a comprehensive glossary, which provides an essential key to the professional language of glass making on Murano, explaining such local terms as murrine, vetro ghiaccio or vetro pulegoso.
