Borden's Milk Bottle, Ca 1930-60's Embossed Square
Grand-mom worked many years for Borden's milk in N.J. The embossed milk bottles, those with raised lettering, were first made in the 1930's. After that, the name and info were stamped in color onto the plain glass. The re-usable bottles, like this one, were gone by the 1960's. One would put the emptied bottles in a metal box outside the back door. The milkman came, took the empties, and left filled bottles of milk in the morning. This is one of the last of the last at least I think so. It is square, 8 ¾ inches tall, with Borden's in raised script twice around the shoulder (with an R in a circle); fill to arrow on flange is in raised letters just above the Borden's; a small arrow is seen above the flange; then, one quart 1748 liquid Reg. 23 Sealed (a shield) S is in raised letters around the lower edge. Underneath in raised numbers: 25 then what looks like 66 over 65. Maybe the 66 over the 65 was meant to change the year, as in 1966 replacing 1965? Pure speculation on my part! There is some sign of wear, light surface scratches on high areas, where bottles might come into contact with each other. Bottle is clean and has 2 mold lines. Buyer to pay for shipping by USPS Priority with Delivery Confirmation, 3 ½ lbs. from 06068. #591
