These tortoise shell screw back earrings could belong to a number of eras, but I believe I have come to the proper conclusion through the process of elimination. Since I also have a tortoise shell necklace for sale that I thought was Victorian, I felt these were as well, especially since tortoise shell is now a banned material. However, the screw backs look too recent and do not look like those used in the mid 1800s. My next thought was that they were imitation tortoise made of Bakelite dating them to the 1930s. They do not test position for Bakelite though. The only option left seems to fit the physical characteristics of the earrings. The screw backs look like they date more around the early 1960s, right about the time women were turning away from these and clips and having their ears pierced. Also to be noted is that they were made by machine. I can see that the holes were drilled and the butterfly designed edges are too clean to be hand carved. That leaves only one possibility; they were made for the tourist trade in the Islands. On a tour back in the 80s I visited a native's home on Jamaica where I was shown a new catch of a large tortoise. It was heart breaking to me, but I was told that it was their way of survival. The turtles were caught and sold live to the restaurants that made soup from them for the tourist trade, and in turn sold the shells to other vendors that were either sold whole to tourists, or made into other objects for sale. Condition: The only condition issue is on the tip of one wing where it looks like the machine cut into the design more than was intended. It is not something that is noticed with the naked eye. Also the backs turn in position, but could be glued in place if you don't care for that option.

Heavy Brass African Tribal Necklace. This unsigned 46 inch long Brass Necklace had large 1/2 inch diameter Bell Shaped Beads. They are strung tightly so that you can twist the strand and kink the strand and it will hold whatever shape you put them in. Almost reminds you of a snake necklace. This came from an estate sale and the history is unknown. (Also See carved ox-bone necklace). There is also a series of small brass beads near the clasp for comfort around the neck with a brass hook and ring clasp.

This brooch is a real beauty with its floret shaped crystals called margarita stones, set in a domed filigree pin. It is large at 2.25 inches across and is in the most gorgeous purple blue crystal, which are referred to in reference guides as amethyst, and reminds me of the watermelon stones. They change color with the lighting. Condition: I noticed after taking the photos that one of the small rhinestones had fallen off. A 1960s hip modernist abstract pendant on a nice 28 inch length chain. The 2-1/2 inch pendant looks like putter with a brushed finish and the center ball is either silver or base metal. Rather than break these four items up, I thought it would be nice to sell them just as I found them, tucked inside an old black leatherette covered hinged metal jewelry gift box.
