Esterbrook #1550 Firm Extra Fine Bookkeeping Renew
This Durachrome Renew-Point #1550 Firm Extra Fine Bookkeeping replaceable pen point unit was made by The Esterbrook Pen Company, Camden, N.J., U.S.A for Esterbrook Fountain Pens. Marked on the box: #1550 Firm Extra Fine Bookkeeping / Made in U.S.A. / Esterbrook / Camden, N.J. Richard Esterbrook was a Cornish Quaker from England who saw an opportunity in the United States to manufacture Steel Pens. In 1856 R.Esterbrook traveled to the US to set up shop as The Steel Pen Manufacturing Company where Richard made these steel pens by hand using special tools and machines (mostly that Richard had to invent). In 1858 he was able to establish himself as the sole pen manufacturer in the USA and he changed the company name to The Esterbrook Steel Pen Mfg. Co. The company settled down in Camden, New Jersey. In 1947 the company bought out John Mitchell and the American branch had already acquired Hazel Pen co. The company re-formed again as The Esterbrook Pen Company. Just as a personal note, this is the last company name the dip pen nibs were manufactured under. So that means some time after this the company ceased production of dip pen nibs permanently. There were numerous administrative changes and moves and eventually their final base of operations was vacated in 1972. New in it's original box it measures 1 1/4 inches long. I have 4 of these renew points in stock. Price quoted is for each one ordered. An addition to any Vintage Esterbrook Fountain Pen Collection. SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions please contact me and thank you for looking.
This standard thread Venus Medium #55P replaceable pen point unit was made by The American Pencil Company. Marked on the box: Guaranteed by the Makers of Venus and Velvet Pencils / Printed in U.S.A. Venus Pencils were a brand name of pencils made by the American Lead Pencil Company starting in 1905. The production of Venus pencils gave the company an early start on other major companies in the move to high-end pencils that were mainly aimed at artists and architects. During World War I Germany's supply of pencils lost its domination in the US market and allowed US companies to take over. Venus pencils were already being produced before the war and had become very popular during its time. In 1956, the American Lead Pencil Company officially changed their name to the Venus Pen and Pencil Corporation, thus turning their fifty-one-year-old product into the company name. After some acquirements the company name was changed to Venus-Esterbrook in 1967. In 1973, the company was bought out by Faber-Castell and their name was changed for the last time to the Faber-Castell Corporation. This ended use of the Venus name and trademark. New in it's original box it measures 1 1/4 inches long. An addition to any Vintage Fountain Pen Collection. SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed.
