Circa: early 1900's-1930's
Condition: Good+
Manufacturer: THE LUFKIN RULE CO. SAGINAW MICH.
This is a rare salesman sample type boxwood ruler that a salesman might give to perspective customers or use to assist in ordering other measuring tools and rulers. This rule is marked "TEMPERATURE CORRECTIONS FOR LUFKIN STEEL TAPES MADE IN U.S.A.". If you look closely at the graduations on this rule, you will not that in comparison, the two scales are quite a bit different on the side with two graduations. The one scale reads a total of 6 inches, while the other (which is a 1/10th scale) is only 5 inches in the same 6 inch distance. No doubt steel tapes could shrink or expand in extreme temperatures, but I am surprised by this comparison. Perhaps this is a shrink rule scale of sorts, but I have not found this rule description to know for sure. As you can see there are other smaller graduated scales on the other side too. The boxwood is straight, not damaged except for the two ink blots, one on either side. The scales behind these blot may have been blotted out on purpose to avoid confusion over which scale to use. A rare ruler! Never seen another like it!
