C.1923 Singer Midgets Munchkins Side Show - Photo
Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This interesting 8 x 10 photo print is from an original photo known to be c.1923 Singer midgets Louis Vashek and Dora Vieg. ================================================== Some history of the 'Singer Midgets' from the net: The Singer Midgets Side Show was a silent movie from 1921. A large group of little people were collectively known as 'Singer's Midgets' because Mr. Singer was responible for contracting them. From kansas0z . com: In 1938 M-G-M contracted with Mr. Singer to provide 124 midgets for the upcoming production of the Wizard of Oz. These little people became known as Munchkins that would inhabit Munchkinland. It is thought that Leo Singer brought about 122 people to the M-G-M lot and that a couple of other little people appeared on their own from hearing about the pending production. None-the-less they had to sign a contract with Mr. Singer as he had the sole rights given to him by M-G-M to provide the little people for the film. Singer was not only responsible for attaining the number of people needed but he was also to see to their housing, food, and oversee that they were where they should be when needed. =============================================== This would be wonderful displayed in your Carnival-Circus-Sideshow-Freak Memorabilia Collection... Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This interesting 8 x 10 photo print is from an original photo known to be from c.1923 depicting Johann Aasen, a circus performer from the Al G. Barnes Amusement Co., full-length portrait, standing, facing front, holding a dwarf in each hand This is all the information we have on this image. This would be wonderful displayed in your Carnival-Circus Memorabilia Collection... =========================================== Johann Aasen was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1890 and was of Norwegian heritage. He was with the Al G. Barnes circus in 1923. He was known as The Motion Picture Giant because he appeared in a total of 7 movies, but only one was a talkie. Unfortunately, John had mental health problems and was admitted to the Mendocino, California State hospital in 1937. He passed away there August 1st, 1938. Al G. Barnes Obituary tells some of the history of his circus (White Tops Circus Magazine - September, 1931): The well-known circus owner of the Pacific coast, Al G. Barnes, died July 25, at his ranch in Indio, California. He was 68 years of age. He had been ill for most of the past year, pneumonia and complications being given as the cause. His right name was Alpheus George Barnes Stonehouse. He was born in Lobo, Ontario, Canada, September 1, 1862. He was married three times and is survived by all three, Mrs. Dollie Barnes, Mrs. Jane Barnes, and Mrs. Margaret Goldsboro Barnes who at his death was at his bedside, he having married her last December. Two daughters and a son by his second wife also survive. He also has a sister, Mrs. Lydia Bishop. His circus career was spectacular. He built up a well known circus and wild animals show in which he introduced no few novelties and original stunts, many of which are now incorporated in other shows. With Dolly Barlow, who later became his first wife, he started a small wagon show in Glenwood Springs, Calif., in 1895. A pony and picture machine, then new, featured that show. His boyhood was spent on a farm. He built it up to as large as a thirty car railroad show. For the most part he always operated in the West but ten or so years ago he ventured across the Mississippi River and played the East. In January, 1929, he sold out to the American Circus Corporation. In September that year they in turn included the Barnes circus with the others that they sold to John Ringling. Ringling now operates the Barnes title. Barnes took part in his own shows up to the time he sold out. He appeared in opening on Tusko , the huge elephant he featured. ========================================== This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. Miss Victorina swallows an electric light and it shines through the flesh, making her body transparent to the astounded beholders, Swallowing daggers and hurling them at a target balanced on a sword swallowed by a child... This would be wonderful displayed in your Carnival-Circus-Sideshow-Freak Memorabilia Collection... ========================================== Some history of KAR-MI from swordswallow . com: A performing husband and wife team in the 1890s, husband Joe Van Victorina (Joseph B. Hallworth, also known as Kar-mi ) and wife Miss Victorina (Kitty Fisher, a native of Berlin) both swallowed swords in their act - Kar-mi would swallow a loaded gun barrel, and while it was down his throat, would shoot a cracker off a man's head, while Miss Victorina was said to have swallowed a record 16 swords at once around the turn of the century. In 1899 the Victorinas put out a Text Book On The Art of Sword Swallowing - Explaining How To Do It Sixteen Different Ways with some mythical tips on how to swallow swords, some written in an untranslatable ancient script! The Boston Herald of December 28th, 1902, described Victorina's performance: By long practice she has accustomed herself to swallow swords, daggers, bayonets, walking sticks, rods, and other dangerous articles. Her throat and food passages have become so expansive that she can swallow three long swords almost up to the hilts, and can accommodate a dozen shorter blades. On one occasion, while sword-swallowing in Boston, a sword pierced a vein in her throat. The blade was half-way down, but instead of immediately pulling it out, she pushed it further in. She was laid up in a hospital for 3 months after this performance. In Chicago she had an even narrower escape. One day while performing at a museum on Clark Street, Victorina passed a long thin dagger down her throat. In withdrawing it, the blade snapped in two, leaving the pointed portion some distance in her passage. Dropping the hilt on the floor, she leaned forward, and placing her finger and thumb down her throat, she succeeded in catching the end of the blade and pulled it out. ============================================ This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. He developed and grew normally for the first six months of his life, at which point he was 25 inches (64 cm) long and weighed 15 pounds (6.8 kg). Then he stopped. His parents were concerned when after his first birthday they noticed he hadn't grown in the last six months. They showed him to their doctor, who offered little hope that he would ever reach normal height. The doctor was right. By late 1842, Charles Stratton hadn't grown an inch in height or put on a pound in weight from when he was six months old. Apart from this, he was a totally normal child. His parents were reportedly embarrassed by his extremely small stature. Stratton though had several siblings who were of average size. At this time, Barnum heard about Stratton and after reassuring his parents, he taught the boy how to sing, dance, mime, impersonate famous people and perform. Barnum also went into business with Stratton's father, who died in 1855. Barnum was actually a distant relative (half fifth cousin, twice removed).[1] In 1843, at the tender age of five years old, Tom Thumb made his first tour of America, with routines that included impersonating characters such as Cupid and Napoleon Bonaparte as well as singing, dancing and comical banter with another performer who acted as a straight man. It was a huge success and the tour expanded. A year later, Barnum took young Stratton on a tour of Europe making him an international celebrity. Stratton appeared twice before Queen Victoria. On one occasion, Stratton was attacked by Queen Victoria's pet poodle after a performance at Buckingham Palace.[2] To someone of Stratton's size, the dog would have seemed a large and threatening animal. He also met the three-year-old Prince of Wales, who would become King Edward VII, and shook hands with him. The Prince, who was of average height for his age, towered 12 inches over Stratton. This tour was a huge success and crowds mobbed him wherever he went. Stratton was also given his own carriage to travel in. It made vast amounts of money for both Barnum and Stratton's family. ============================================ Keywords: memorabilia collecting collectibles antiques collectable collectables patents print prints 1860s vintage collecting dealers merchandise artwork for sale cool vintage antique buy shopping print prints shop dealer antique collectible circuses carnivals thrillshows sideshow sideshows midgets dwarfs freaks

Barnum. He is often considered the father of the modern zoo because he introduced natural animal enclosures that included recreations of animals' native habitats. Hagenbeck founded Germany's most successful privately owned zoo, which moved to its present location in Hamburg-Stellingen in 1907. However, his pioneer role in displaying human beings aside animals, in what has been called human zoos, is less well known. ============================================ This would be wonderful displayed in your Carnival-Circus Memorabilia Collection... Corgi # 426 Smith's Karrier Van - Chipperfields
This scale model die cast toy, #426 Smith's Karrier Van - Chipperfields Circus Mobile Booking Office was made by Corgi Toys in 1967. Corgi started life as a division of Mettoy, a company founded in 1933 by Philipp Ullmann. Mettoy, short for metal toys, set up a factory in Swansea, South Wales, in 1944. From 1950 onwards Mettoy released some die-cast vehicles but it wasn't until late 1955 that the Corgi brand was born. The Corgi name was probably chosen as it's the Queens favorite breed of dog and their Welsh origins. Having now started in the vehicle die-cast market, Mettoy had to compete with a rival brand - Dinky Toys. Corgi needed a gimmick to get a foothold into the market and so decided to use the latest technology, plastic! Using plastic for the windows was a revelation, but Corgi didn't stop there as they also introduced opening doors, boots and bonnets, suspension and jewelled headlights ! Corgi were not afraid to take risks and started up the Corgi Model Club and even advertised on TV as early as 1957. Mettoy became a public company in 1963 and at their peak employed some 6000 staff. Due to imports from the Far East, production slowed throughout the 70's and 80's and in 1983 were declared bankrupt. Out of the ashes rose Corgi Toys Ltd run by a management buy-out team. This new company was led by Mike Rosser until 1989 when it was sold to the US giant Mattel. Today Corgi is back in private British ownership and flourishing well. This red bus with blue roof has plastic windows that have pictures of animals on 1 side and clowns on the other with clown decals on the sides that say: Book in Advance and Book Here. Marked on the bottom: Corgi Toys-Smith's Karrier Van / Made in Great Britain it comes in it's original box that is marked: Die Cast Scale Model / Playcraft Toys LTD. London. In very good + condition it measures 1 7/8 inches tall, 3 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inches wide. An addition to any Corgi Die Cast Toy Collection. SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. Patent Art: 1930s Cyclone Roller Coaster By H. Traver

This wonderful reproduction of the original patent graphic is crisply printed on luxurious Ivory Parchment Paper. It includes a white acid-free matte and is ready for insertion into a standard 8 x 10 frame for hanging. Graphic area shown is 4 1/2 x 6 1/2 . Also, included are the remaining pages of the Patent Document printed on 20# white bond paper to complete the Patent information for the collector. Image included here is low-quality for quick loading on the net with SAMPLE written across, which will not be on your print. ===================================================== Some Traver History from ultimaterollercoaster . com: The Traver Engineering Company erected both the Cyclone at Revere Beach, Massachusetts and the Thunderbolt at Savin Rock in Connecticut in 1925. These were Prior and Church designs and allowed Traver's company to cut their teeth building coasters. Both of these coasters had similar layouts and were typical Prior and Church rides. One year later Traver premiered two coasters at the Philadelphia Sesquicentennial Exposition. The Cyclone was a wooden coaster with steel supports that had some of the same elements found on his later coasters, such as the spiraling drop, a sharp, downward helix, track made from eight layers of wood and articulated cars. This coaster was the first recorded coaster to use the name Cyclone, which later became synonymous with powerful wooden roller coasters. The other coaster at the exposition was the often historically overlooked Jazz Railway. Traver called it the Jazz Railway so he could leave all references to wooden coasters behind. You could tell by looking that coaster had many of the elements Traver loved to include. Roller coaster historian Richard Munch says that Traver counted among his favorite elements, the spiral drop, deep dips and jump track. The ride was small [it occupied a space 70 x 165 feet] and considered to be the forerunner of the Wild Mouse coaster. Also, it was constructed of prefabricated steel, and Traver saw steel as the material which would become the main support material for roller coasters. =============================================== Makes a terrific gift for the collector or an addition to your collection!
