To survive in vaudeville, Houdini invented the Escape Challenge, daring spectators to handcuff or tie him in unusual knots and devices- and Houdini was always able to escape. A public relations genius far ahead of his time, Houdini created the image of the living superhero, escaping from straitjackets, bonds and jails. Houdini changed his direction in the early 1900s, abandoning the Challenge (sadistic policemen were caught on several occasions trying to shackle Houdini with hopelessly jammed cuffs) in favor of the straightforward escape. The Metamorphosis (in which he instantly changed places with his wife Bess, who was locked inside a trunk), the Milk Can (in which he was locked inside a metal can full of liquid) and the Water Torture Cell (in which he was shackled upside down inside a tank full of water) were his most famous onstage escape illusions. To Houdini's credit as an illusion designer, all three of these illusions are still widely performed today. Houdini again changed direction after 1913, when his mother died. Heavy with grief, Houdini turned to spirit mediums in an effort to contact his mother, and was shocked to find that the mediums were nothing more than frauds using magic tricks to con their victims. Furious, Houdini launched a passionate crusade to expose spirit mediums by actually performing their miracles and then exposing them as a part of his stage show. Houdini died unexpectedly in 1926 on Halloween, not from a stage trick gone wrong (as depicted in the 1953 Tony Curtis movie on Houdini), but from peritonitis. Houdini had been suffering the symptoms of appendicitis for several days when he was punched in the stomach several times by a McGill University student who was testing Houdini's ability to withstand blows. The punches ruptured the already distressed appendix, and Houdini's refusal to seek medical attention for another several days caused the fatal infection (the same type of infection, by the way, that had claimed Rudolph Valentino only months before). Houdini had been planning a spectacular illusion called Buried Alive, in which he was to remain sealed in a buried coffin for an extended period before escaping. The coffin was on tour with him when he died, and his body was shipped home in it. Though Houdini was most known as an escape artist and magician, he also owned his own movie company, making several films in which he, of course, starred. He also held a U.S. patent for an improved diving suit, and was the first pilot to fly solo in Australia. ============================================ Keywords: patents patent print prints magic magician magicians shop dealer show shows illusion illusions magik majik conjuring antiques antique trick tricks triks memorabilia collectible collectibles collectable collectables vintage escape artists

A wide variety of posters were used for propaganda purposes during the First World War. This is one of them. In the summer of 1918, the eight leading war-work agencies were merged, for the purpose of one drive for funds, into the United War Work Campaign. These normally competing charities shared the proceeds of this fundraising under the United War Work banner. They included the YM and YWCA, Knights of Columbus, Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service, American Library Association and the Salvation Army. Incidentally, several websites we found offered extensive lists and views of these kind of posters. Some are really fascinating and were drawn by recognized artists of the era. This poster, measuring 8.5 by 11.5 inches, shows a screaming American Eagle with the United War Work Campaign shield informing the reader that 'A boy from this home has enrolled in the Victory Boys to earn and give to make our fighters fit.' It is printed on a light paper, the usual type during wartime, and has been framed under glass to prevent damage. The frame measures 9.75 by 12.75 inches and is wood without apparent defects. There are a couple of minor tears on the paper's folds, with corners also showing some damage, evidently where it was taped to a window. Overall, though, it's in Very Good condition. A nice addition to your World War I collection! (5094)

Here's a great print of the clock tower of the Marshall County, Iowa, courthouse in Marshalltown, IA, drawn in the 1970s by Marshalltown artist Ray Frederick and offered to local residents to raise funds for the complete renovation of the stately old building. The renovation was completed and returned the building to its 19th century beauty, while still providing space for county offices and courts. The print measures about 22-in. by 28-in. and would be beautiful in a dark frame! (Frame is not included.) Condition is AS NEW with no defects. Here's a neat 48-star American flag from the World War II era. It measures 26 by 42 inches. Made of a gauze-like material, these flags were distributed throughout the country at the time the U.S. entered the War. Ours has been kept rolled in a dry place so there is little fading. Since it is not hemmed on the right end, there is some unraveling of the fabric, as well as a small tear about 2 inches into the fabric. It could be easily hemmed to prevent future damage ... and could use a good cleaning! Still -- it's a nice one - even today!

We're not certain just what the blue figure at left side of this figural Red Cross symbol pin is - it appears that it's designed to look like a flagpole/lanyard. If you have a better idea, let us know! The fold-tab button measures about .75-inch wide and just over 1-inch tall, including the tab. There are union bugs on the tab. It appears to be an older one perhaps from early in the 1900s. (t2222)

This lovely little candy box was a souvenir from THE LITTLE WHITE HOUSE in WARM SPRINGS, GEORGIA. This was FDR's vacation White House for the duration of WWII, and the site of his death. It features a picture of the house on the lid of the box. The rear is marked with the Royal Winton, Staffordshire England marks and is impressed CANDY BOX. There is some age crazing on the lid only and the upper right corner of the box has a tiny chip, otherwise it is in good shape. Not sure of the age of this vintage piece, but probably late 40's, early 50's. Box measures 3 1/2 x 5 1/2. We generally ship to domestic customers by USPS Priority Mail, so buyer will add $3.95 plus any applicable insurance.

Scenes of Piccadilly Circus and Buckingham Palace are featured on this pair of vintage souvenir Salt and Pepper Shakers. The decals are nice and bright, and very detailed. Judging from the wear to the gold trim just where they would be handled, these are fairly old. They also have brass tops...both of which have split so should be replaced if you want to use them. Otherwise, for a collection, they are just fine. Shakers are just shy of 3 tall.

This is a membership receipt from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge No. 40 in Marshalltown, Iowa, dated 1926. With the official seal of the organization embossed at bottom left and various symbols of the organization printed on the top corners, it's quite an impressive 'Official Certificate.' Dues were $1.00 annually back then, and the back of the certificate notes that this is the only legal receipt issued and it was to be used when a member visited other lodges. Condition of this 75-year-old certificate is Very Good, with only a slight center fold. A great one for framing!
Here's the program from the February 22-23, 1964 Open House at the Evangelical Hospital, Marshalltown, Iowa. Published by Blue Cross/Blue Shield (and with a nice ad for that company on the back that lists all BC/BS groups in Marshall County), the 8.5 by 11 inch four-page folder has a photo of the hospital with its new wing on the cover. Inside is a complete floor plan of the new area, as well as information on its new features, the power plant, financial supporters and goals. It also mentions that a new Student Nurse Dormitory was soon to be built. A piece of ephemera from 40+ years ago, it's a good addition to your hospital or Marshalltown collection! Condition is Very Good, although it shows slight yellowing and has some very minor edge/corner wear.
Here are five color postcards showing the 'Friendship West' (now 'The Embers') retirement community in Marshalltown, Iowa. They include three exterior (Artist's drawing of entire facility; photo of main entrance; and photo of exterior from west parking lot) and two interior views (Foyer lounge and dining room [not shown]; Exercise pool). The facility was developed from the former St. Thomas Hospital building and offers 'the finest in Living Care Retirement.' These cards are all unused and have divided backs. They were published by Vernon Co., Newton, Iowa. We don't find any, but we've done our best with the images below to show you any defects that appear on the face of the cards.
Pretty pink western style porcelain boot marked Made in Germany in red. There is also an A impressed in the clay. It was a souvenir of Auburn, NH . The boot stands 4 1/4 high and has no cracks or chips, although it does have a dimple from a popped bubble near the toe. The mark would date the piece to pre-war Germany.
Vintage souvenir of the Capitol Building in Washing DC. The photo has the same look as early tinted postcards, and it is set in a very ornate silver plate frame which is marked on the back WMFM . Plating has worn just enough that some of the brass base is beginning to show through, but actually adds to the piece giving it a soft aged appearance. The chasing on it is quite lovely and very detailed with scrolls and florals (see close up image). The whole thing pops off the stand for easy cleaning or to be placed flat if one desired to do so.
A souvenir of the Cathedral at Reims, France, and a most impressive piece of intaglio cut glass with detail that is amazing. One can see right through the doors and arches at every tiny line. It was made as an ashtray, but I can't imagine anyone putting their old stogy out in this beauty ... seems almost sacrilegious. The piece measures 5 1/4 long by 4 1/2 wide and the sides slopes 1 from the top to the base. The base is ground and polished. There is a little roughness at one of the base corners and it would appear 2 of one of the edges has been lightly re-ground and polished. Despite this, the piece is in overall excellent condition. Hard to date this piece, but from the look of the color, we would estimate it to be rom the 1930's or 40's. It is marked in the glass 'R C DEPOSE' . This piece displays beautifully.
Heavy duty metal tray with hook for hanging features a vintage print or a photo of Thompson Hall ( from the University of New Hampshire in Durham, NH) which has been applied to the tray as a placemat. The tray is very nice quality with rolled edges and black lacquer-like finish. The bottom of the tray does have some paint loss from normal use. Tray is about 17 1/2 x 11 3/4 wide. Still very useable.
A unique souvenir cup and saucer from Shakespeare's hometown we believe to be made by Davenport. Images of Anne Hathaway's Cottage , Shakespeare's House From The West , and the Stratford On Avon Church are featured on the saucer, the church and the Bard's house on the inside of the cup. What really makes this item charming is the partial transfer that reads, Manufactured for Mrs. Latimer's China Rooms, Stratford-on Avon on the base of the cup. The only mark on the saucer is an impressed D under glaze. The set is in nice condition with no chips and one age crack on the cup. Both pieces retain most of their rim gold, and both have light crazing. Dating from the late 1800's when black and white Transferware was popular. This set is an absolute must if you collect Shakespeare or English teacups!!!! Price reflects condition.
