Vintage 14k Enamel Knights Of Columbus 50 Yr Lapel Pin
Apprx 1/2 , vintage Knights of Columbus pin, stamped 14K yellow gold with enamelling. Given to a fifty year member. Excellent condition. Approx. 2 grams without the clasp (which appears to be brass). more on K of C from the internet: Emblem of the Order The Third Degree Emblem The Emblem of the order dates from the Second Supreme meeting, May 12, 1883, when it was designed by James T. Mullen, who was then the first Supreme Knight. A quick glance at the emblem indicates a shield mounted upon the cross of Malta. The Shield is that associated with a medieval Knight. The cross of Malta is the representation of a traditionally artistic design of the Cross of Christ through which all graces of redemption were procured for mankind. This then, represents the Catholic spirit of the Order. Mounted on the shield are three objects, a mace standing vertically, and, crossed behind it, an anchor and a dagger or short sword. The mace from Roman days is symbolic of authority, which must exist in any tightly bonded and efficiently operating organization. The anchor is the mariner's symbol for Columbus, patron of the Order, while the short sword or dagger was the weapon of the Knight when engaged upon an errand of mercy. Thus, the shield expresses Catholic Knighthood in organized merciful action and with the letters K of C, it proclaims this specific form of activity. The red, white and blue in the background are the colors of the flag of the country in which the order originated. FAITH...HOPE...CHARITY Red is the symbol of Faith, of belief in Christ, in the Redemption and in the mission of every man to spread the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. White is the color of the Eucharistic Host, symbolizing God's presence among men and of the infinite love God has for man. White is then the symbol of Christ-like Charity. Blue is the color of Our Lady's mantle in which she draped her beloved Son, through Whom salvation came to a sinful world. Blue is then the symbol of Hope. Degree of Patriotism The Fourth Degree Emblem The Knights of Columbus, an array of dedicated Catholic gentlemen, glory in the epithet: The right arm of the Catholic Church. Sir Knights of the Fourth Degree deem it an honor and privilege to carry the triad emblem, which features the Dove, Cross, and Globe. Our honored Order cherishes its patron Christopher Columbus. Christopher Christ bearer Columbus. The Dove of Peace symbolizes the Paraciete. The Cross of Christ is the sign of our Christian faith; similarly, the Globe depicts the New World, the miraculous discovery of Columbus. Spiritually, the sacred symbols fashioned on our sword and lapel pin typify the union of the three divine Persons in one Godhead, the Most Holy Trinity. The Globe - God the Father, Creator of the Universe The Cross - God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind The Dove - God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of Humanity God willing, may we, Christian Soliders in the Columbian Crusade, lend loyalty to our honored Order, Patriotism to our beloved America, and Devotion the Holy Mother Church, all for the greater glory of God Almighty.

Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This interesting black x 7 is from an original photo known to be from c.1915 Dance Pose - Ted Shawn. ======================================================= Some history from queerestplaces . wordpress .com: n 1915, modern dance pioneers Ted Shawn and Ruth St. Denis founded the Denishawn School of Dancing and the Denishawn Dance Company in Los Angeles, whose most illustrious student was Martha Graham. In her autobiography, Graham wrote that Shawn was prone to auditioning men for Denishawn by requiring that they send nude photos of themselves. Shawn and St. Denis (who was 14 years older than Shawn) were legally husband and wife for 50 years, though each enjoyed outside affairs. In 1927, they unfortunately fell in love with the same man, Fred Beckman, whom they made their personal representative. Having the same taste in men caused an irreparable split in their marriage, and four years later, they began living separately and closed Denishawn. Shawn (1891-1972) bought a colonial-era farm at this location in the Berkshires after his marriage collapsed. He called the site Jacob's Pillow after a big, sloping rock near the main house. In 1933, he founded an all-male troupe called the Men Dancers, designed to showcase men's contributions to the field of modern dance. Shawn and his young male dancers lived on the property in a rustic setting without heat or running water. (Shawn had a private shower and toilet, but the other dancers used an outhouse papered with covers from the New Yorker.) At lunch time, Shawn would read aloud to the dancers, who were all nude, on the terrace from books on art, physics, and history. The Men Dancers gave their first performance at Jacob's Pillow in the summer of 1933. It was held in the barn/studio and attended by 50 people who paid 75 cents each. After that, the company held dance performances yearly, though they were then called teas and not a festival. Shawn's company lasted until 1940, when he disbanded it and gave each member either a cash settlement or a parcel of land at Jacob's Pillow. The rest of the land he sold the following year to a group who founded the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival, which continues today as one of the world's pre-eminent performance festivals. In 1942, the festival converted the old barn into the Ted Shawn Theater, which retains the rustic charm of the early days of Shawn's endeavor while being the first theater designed specifically for dance. ================================================== This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. She developed a reputation as a serious dramatic actress, earning the nickname The Divine Sarah. Bernhardt had an affair with a Belgian nobleman, Charles-Joseph Eugène Henri, Prince de Ligne, with whom she had her only child, Maurice Bernhardt, in 1864 (he married a Polish princess, Maria Jablonowska, 1863-1914) (see Jablonowski). C.1882 Oscar Wilde Posing W/book -gay Interest Fabulous
Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This interesting black x 10 is from an original photo known to be c.1882 - Oscar Wilde, full-length portrait, facing right, sitting in chair, right hand on cheek, left hand holding book. =================================================== Some wikipedia . org biographical info: Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (October 16, 1854 - November 30, 1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, poet, and author of short stories. Known for his barbed wit, he was one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London, and one of the greatest celebrities of his day. As the result of a famous trial, he suffered a dramatic downfall and was imprisoned for two years of hard labour after being convicted of the offence of gross indecency . Though Wilde's sexual orientation has variously been considered bisexual, homosexual, and paederastic, Wilde himself felt he belonged to a culture of male love inspired by the Greek paederastic tradition. In describing his own sexual identity, Wilde used the term Socratic. He may have had significant sexual relationships with (in chronological order) Frank Miles, Constance Lloyd (Wilde's wife), Robert Baldwin Ross, and Lord Alfred Douglas ( Bosie ). Wilde also had numerous sexual encounters with working-class male youths, who were often rent boys. ================================================ This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This interesting black x 7 is from an original photo known to be 'The Amazons', Dickson House Play, January 1896. ================================================= Some history from the net: In 1881 President Seelye banned the wearing of masculine attire in theatrical productions but said that students could adopt a suggestive style in their rendition of masculine roles. According to reports in the Smith College Monthly, the student reaction was subversive. Their immediate response was to put up a flyer for their latest play, stating it would be performed in the suggestive style and then the actors dressed in excessively feminine attire , and walked around the stage with placards which read this is a man , this is rock , this is a tree . When or whether Seelye's ban was lifted, or whether it simply faded away, is hard to tell from the remaining sources. The first photographs I have come across of students wearing full male attire for theatrical productions is for the 1896 staging of Arthur Pinero's farcical play called The Amazons. [28] The play was a popular one with four productions over ten years and it provided students with the opportunity to cross-dress in a perfectly respectable fashion. The play revolves around the three daughters of Lady Castlejordan, who have been brought up as young men and follows their secret liaisons with three male suitors without their mother's knowledge. The ensuing gender disruption is totally chaotic to say the least, with girls dressed as boys kissing boys, who are actually girls, and vice versa. Surely, one of the reasons for the popularity of theatrical cross-dressing was the opportunity it gave the students to experiment with the same-sex erotic possibilities offered by taking on masculine attire . In the quest for authentic characterisation of male parts, students were able to play with the idea of same-sex desire, but with the understanding that the artifice involved was contained by the temporary and fictional boundaries of the play and its staging. As cultural studies theorist Marjorie Garber comments: The ideological implications of this pattern are clear: cross dressing can be 'fun' or 'functional' so long as it occupies a liminal space and a temporary time period: after this carnivalization however the cross dresser is expected to resume life as he or she was. ============================================== This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. Doctors Enbalming Technique Civil War Photo - 8x10
Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This unique antique view is a 5 x 7 photo print is from the civil war era and depicts Dr. Chamberlain embalming surgeon . These men were usually surgeons who had learned the embalming procedure either from Dr. Holmes himself, or from one of his protégés. As time passed the undertaker began to see the potential of the embalming procedure for his profession. Thus many of them began learning the procedure. Slowly embalming became an integral part of the undertaking business offering, although it did take some years before it became commonplace. In the photo above Drs. Chamberlin and Lyford appear to be demonstrating the embalming technique to two Union officers. Note the two previously embalmed soldiers in the coffins on either side of the tent. This may have merely been staged for the photographer. The field setup pictured might be very typical of that found near a battlefield or field hospital. ============================================ This wonderful reproduction of the original printed graphic is crisply printed on matte finish heavy photo paper. Matted and ready to pop into a standard frame: This unique antique view is an 8 x 10 photo print is from an original photo Antietam, Md. Allan Pinkerton, President Lincoln, and Maj. Gen John A. McClernand. ========================================= Allan Pinkerton history from wikipedia . org: Early life and career Pinkerton was born in Glasgow, Scotland, to William Pinkerton and his wife Isabell, in 1819. The location of the house where he was born is now occupied by the Glasgow Central Mosque. A cooper by trade, he was active in the Chartist movement as a young man. Disillusioned by the failure to win universal suffrage, Pinkerton emigrated to the United States in 1842, at the age of 23. In 1849 Pinkerton was appointed as the first detective in Chicago. In the 1850s, he partnered with Chicago attorney Edward Rucker in forming the North-Western Police Agency, later known as the Pinkerton Agency. Pinkerton's business insignia was a wide open eye with the caption We Never Sleep. As the United States expanded in territory, rail transportation increased. Pinkerton's agency solved a series of train robberies during the 1850s, bringing Pinkerton first into contact with George McClellan and Abraham Lincoln Prior to his service with the Union Army, he developed several investigative techniques that are still used today. Among them are shadowing (surveillance of a suspect) and assuming a role (undercover work). Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Pinkerton served as head of the Union Intelligence Service in 1861-62 and foiled an alleged assassination plot in Baltimore, Maryland, while guarding Abraham Lincoln on his way to his inauguration. His agents often worked undercover as Confederate soldiers and sympathizers, in an effort to gather military intelligence. Pinkerton served several undercover missions under the alias of Major E.J. Allen. Pinkerton was succeeded as Intelligence Service chief by Lafayette Baker. The Intelligence Service was the forerunner of the U.S. Secret Service. This photograph is of Sherman in Atlanta, September-November, 1864. After three and a half months of incessant maneuvering and much hard fighting, Sherman forced Hood to abandon the munitions center of the Confederacy. Sherman remained there, resting his war-worn men and accumulating supplies, for nearly two and a half months. During the occupation, George N. Certificate of Authenticity is provided showing this piece to be from an original magazine (not a copy). Some history from wikipedia . org: The Rosicrucian Order is a legendary esoteric order publicly documented in the early 17th century. This hermetic order is viewed among earlier and many modern Rosicrucianists as a College of Invisibles from the inner worlds, composed of great Adepts, aiming to give assistance in humanity's spiritual development. Several modern societies have been formed for the study of Rosicrucianism and allied subjects. However, many researchers on the history of Rosicrucianism argue that modern Rosicrucianists are in no sense directly derived from the Brethren of the Rose Cross of the 17th century. Instead, they are considered to be keen followers. Moreover, some have viewed the 17th century Order as a literary hoax or prank, rather than an operative society. Others contend that history shows them to be the genesis of later operative and functional societies. Rosicrucianism has its roots in the Western mystery tradition and is generally associated with the symbol of the Rose Cross.
